Computer/laptop Repairs

Where is a good place to get a laptop repaired?
Or better yet, how would I get ride of the win32:zhelatin-AMP trojan/worm/pain in the ass?

I can't even properly run my antivirus because even when it finds something, I can't tell it what to do because nothing works.

Any advice on where to go or what to do would be very helpful. Thanks.

instead of 'patching' a broken system, the best thing to do is a fresh install. archive all your music/movies/pix and reinstall a fresh OS

after OS install
- install software firewall
- install free antivirus (clamwin)
- DO NOT USE NORTON PRODUCTS (buggy as hell)

right now i have no way of getting to any of my files since my laptop went bonkers

geek squad charges $200something to install an operating system (hopefully that includes transferring my files onto an external then back into the laptop)

are there any other places i can go to get this done

DEPENDS, if you're using Norton personal...I use symantec corporate and for the past 5 years, it's been the best darn thing out there.....automatically patches itself if there are any problems, (honestly in 5 years, only happened once); updates regularly, like any antivirus, has an excellent antivirus database.

re: to trojan, use DSL 2.0 to transfer your file to a back-up drive (works with USB)..

and LOL LOL LOL LOLLLz....you'd actually pay 200 to get your OS installed again......Christ...add taxes and buy your own WIN XP Pro OS CD and do it yourself...saves you money next time should this happen again.

Cheers.

The computer store where I work at does fresh Windows install for like 50$ but none the less, try booting into safe mode. When the computer turn on just press F8 a few times and it gives you the option to go in safe mode. Try running the Norton anti-virus there. Try using different virus software like Kaspersky or Spybot. Hopefully that works.

if you havent sniffed out the source of infection... reinstalling "fresh" only to place back archived files from the same infected system isn't a good idea... you risk reinfection
Orko
Or...if you live within TO, and are willing to drop it off to my place, I can help you fix it. :)

I live at Yonge and Lawrence, so the choice is yours.

i hate norton. it forces my computer to do things i don't want it to do, like doing intermittent 'checkups' online w/o my consent and locking up my computer.

PROOF THAT NORTON IS A VIRUS

You can safeboot your computer with a simple OS like dos, or win98, and archive your files b4 blowing it up.

$200 for geeksquad? what a rip. you can buy a computer for that amount. better to ask friends like Orko and get it done for free!
