my dell is great, i only use it for internet/minor editing and music work and it cost under 2k for 15" ws 1680x1050 res from an ati x1400 gfx card (no shared memory nonsense) and its a dual core 1.8

get mac or dell imo

I've been told that Dell's are cheapish because they skimp on parts that the average computer user (i.e myself) wouldn't usually notice.

For example, they'll advertise a 100GB hard drive with a 2.4 dual core processor, but they won't advertise that the speed of the hard drive itself will be too slow to keep up with the processor, essentially making the quick new processor only as fast as a year old one.

I get an independent computer guy to assemble a good computer for me. He hunts down all the parts off ebay and stuff, or buys them new if necessary, then charges me $120 to assemble the lot, and he usually works out to be quite cheap. The only catch here is that you need to trust the person.

What s me about buying packaged laptops, such as Acer, Asus, Toshiba etc, is that they often bundle all their ty software/settings onto the laptop and you effectively have to wipe the whole thing as soon as you get it.

Fair enough.

The advice I got was only in relation to desktops now that I think about it.

Go DELL or Mac.. You can't lose.

All comes down to the programs you'll be using. And whether or not there is a Windows/Mac version of them.

im more than aware of hdd speeds etc. and the lappy drives a 5400 in the dells which is pretty standard i think.

at the end of the day if u are only wanting to spend less than 2k, you cant really exoect a whole lot really can you? i mean desktop 'replacement' lappys usually are around the 5k mark and have all the super in there. get what you pay for and get what suits the needs i reckon.

i had a friend work for dell in canada, basically he told me that dell rely on people to upgrade the systems at the time of purchase to make much money on the stuff, so if u r buying one of the special deals they offer usually its dirt cheap because they are hoping u upgrade a few parts like ram or drive size, chuck in a graphics card etc.

yeah

$2,000 is alot if you're smart! I got my old 1.7ghz centrino for $1,200 with a gig of ram. The equivalent specced Asus at the time was $2,100. :)

Got any friends that work in IT? Get them to wholesale you a custom made pioneer laptop. You pay a bit extra for the hardware, but you dont have to pay for Windows etc. "if you already have a copy". ;)

Dell everything is rubbish.

Get an Asus laptop. Very good value for money. hello F3JP (core duo 1.66, 15", 1gb) ? $1349 with vista home, then get an extra gb of ram since it only comes with 1, then reformat it with xp pro :)

Yeah, Don't listen to the computer technician.. IDIOT.

And yes, It's been well established that Vista = .

But DELL laptops are a good alternative if you don't want to buy a mac.
