Firmly Seconded....OR You can dump loads of cash into Promo companies and get graded into superstar categories...like Oakenfold/Tiesto/Ferry Corsten is graded A...blah bah blah...
Money makes the world go round....
Or you can just wait like us to trainspot promos....
Or just buy tracks that people don't spin and still get the excellent response from your residency...not too hard at all...just need to research...after all, being original in your sets is better than jumping the "Southern Sun" bandwagon... |

Get in touch with the record labels who you wanna receive promos from and explain the situation. I'm sure they'll add you to their promo mailing lists if you ask nicely enough :D ....

i believe i read somewhere that you need a residency & you need to prove that you play for something like 100,000 people a month. i believe its pretty outragious. I asked a owner of one of the record shops what the deal is with promos.. and he said they don't care bout giving out records, but the problem is shipping costs them soo much, and if they are shipping records to tons of djs over seas, its killer -- cuz they have to do air. they can't let records sit on a boat for like a month and a half. anyway so what they do is they just give records to the superstars (like yours truly! ahaha i wish)... then they give big boxes to contacts and friends in big cities and let them distro the records. this is why in nyc u can find tons of promos, but if you record shop in wisconsin.. well.. sorry dude
hope that helps
ps wheres ur residency? sates?

your best bet is to pick like 2 or 3 record labels that are your fav and call em up and beg and offer to pay for all shipping charges.
i dunno tho im too broke to try that =)

before a release record labels give out promos to big name djs. now some of us smaller folks get promos from record stores who managed to get their hands on a few. anyway heres the deal. records arent like cds (in most stores anyway). they don't sit around in most stores and wait to be bought. if they don't sell, they usually get take off the shelf and sent back. so record labels send out promos, and do adds for the release date so that the records sell hard while the stores are stocking them.
this means if your lucky you can get your hands on a sick ass record 4 months before release. as for white labels. some promos are white labels, some are professional looking prints. but some full release records are white labels too. it depends who prints them, whats the deal etc etc.
white label = no artwork, shadily printed
promo = pre-release
they can come hand in hand or seporate.
hope that helps
