when finishing a track...

Just wondering what steps everyone takes when completing a track for future use and reference?

What I'd normally do is:

- Burn a Master copy of the audio track onto a cd. Make a 2nd copy of it and store it away

- Bounce out all the individual parts of the track and save all of these as wav files so that they can be used at a later time by yourself, or given to someone else for remix purposes

- Make a back up the entire data track plus copies of all the individual midi date files.

Firstly:

(a) Are there any other things that ppl do?

(b) What's the best way and methods of doing a complete and proper back up of project data and samples etc in Logic. I'm using 5.5 on a pc but i'm sure newer version of Logic would be a similar process.

thanks

Hmm. Definitely have a copy of the final track. I'm using Cubase, so I just freeze all the tracks (actually, I was reading in the manual about a handy "archive" function which does all of this stuff in one go, for when you've finished a track and are looking to file it away for a long time)

My best finished tracks I leave within easy reach on my hard drive, all the earlier versions and unfinished tracks I burn off to dvds periodically, marking the date on the dvd. At some stage I'll pick up a chunky external hard drive for backup purposes as well.

It's a necessary step, even if 99% of the time I don't go back to archived songs. I'd really like to remix a number of the tracks on my first trance album at some stage though...I did the best I could at the time...so it's handy having those files backed up.

I've been meaning to backup my projects and sample/patch library for the past 3 months. I gotta stop procrastinating. :(

I don't save mine as a new project every time I save. I used to do that and ended up with numbers going all the way up to 30. Now I only save it as a new project when there's a more meaningful change. The last finished track went up to 8 I think. Maybe I'll regret it if my latest file corrupts, but in terms of going back to a previous version, that never really happens. When I make a decision to go in a different direction I don't tend to go back to what was there before the decision. If I make a new decision, it's a decision going forward, not backward.

But that's just my personal approach.

I don't think ravers are really good for anything :stongue:

That's nothing really. I peiodically save my tracks either every major change or about every half an hour or so. My last track thad around 230 saved increment versions of it.

You'll be surprised how handy this can be - even for just a piece of mind in case you wanna take a step back

I can understand where you're coming from. But it just never happens that I go back to an earlier version. My mindset is "make the decision and stick with it". Then, if the decision isn't optimal, I tear down and rebuild from where I am, rather than from a previous place I was unhappy with. It's a different mindset.

I'm learning and refining what I'm doing every day I'm in the studio. I used to save many versions. Currently I save less. Maybe next week I'll be back to saving more, who knows? My current approach is working for me currently!
