| 256 is max on a gif... it's a very old format that goes way back to Compuserve. |

lol yeah, before i realized it was the best/only good way to use animations, i'd never use them
and i still get angry when people save plain pictures as gif's |

| that would require a commercially unviable software engineering effort to create the standard, followed by commercially unviable efforts for implementations. moreover, there is an existing format for animated PNGs. |
