*Update* I just made a new arrangement. Polished a few corners, but still needs a bit of details added, I feel. I'll try and work on that next.

>> Here's Beta 2

*Original Post:*

Okay... this is my first trip from the DJ Booth to the Producer's forum. I made a commitment to myself a month ago that I was going to start writing music, and well... here we are.

This is my first major production undertaking. I think it's pretty good for a first shot--but I'll let you all decide that.

I'm not finished with it yet--I'll probably add some more subtle elements, polish the corners, and trim it down a bit (didn't realize it was pushing 12 minutes when I was sequencing it!). But for the most part, it's done.

Honest advice/criticism is appreciated, of course.

I already told you how much I like this already. I'll definitely try to fit this in somewhere in my set on Saturday. Cut it down to about 7-8 minutes and add in some elements, maybe a few new melodies that last only a few bars, different percussion here and there, whichever, just to add a slight bit of variation. Other than that, this is a mint first production.

I love Nic Fanciulli :D

Comments:

The intro is a bit bland but that makes for easy mixing so its not a big deal.

Love the synths.

Percs could use a bit more variation, it sort of seems like its being drawn out and gets a bit boring in the buildup because of it. (Imo)

Overall, a really really great job for your first try. You have a LOT of potential so keep doing your thing man.

I'd love to remix this :p

ok well i already PM'd my review, but i'll post it here too just in case anyone wants to add on it...

really really diggin' this, Tom!

my only major suggestion would be to somehow tweak the melody that comes in around 4:35 - it just seems a little abrupt or something. like i told you before, i don't know when it comes to production, but it definitely sounds like part of that little melody needs to be polished.

also i think it needs to be shortened a bit, but i'm sure you already know that. 12 minutes is just really long for a dance music track. i think if this track was around 7 and a half or 8 minutes long it'd be perfect! i do like the longer intro - would be really fun to do some long mixes with it and layer over another track that's harmonically compatible.

honestly though for a first production it's pretty stellar, and i LOVE the style and melody and feel that comes across while listening to it. kinda bouncy and uplifting but just chugs along nicely and gets my head bobbing... just the kind of stuff i enjoy hearing/playing most. also i think a mashup or acapella version of Without Control would sound ing sweet with this tune.

can't wait to hear/play the final version. definitely keep me updated. :D

and on further inspection (attempting to mix/mashup your tune in Winamp with Without Control on the Darkroom Dubs myspace, lol) the 2 tunes sound REALLY ing good together... even when they're not beatmatched. :p

sup mayn, quick review right hurrrr....as we llistenn...

i think the beginning goes on way to long, i duno..but you got that one synth playing the same rythm, then like you bring in and duble the octave or somthing , same rythm, same drums, then you bring in some bass, same rythm, same drums...this has been going on for like 3 minutes now...i erno.....

so that's the first thing...

there isnt much else going on..it sounds like you got a kick, a snare, and a tamb...so right now...maybe empty?

ok so dat second synth comes in...i think could have came in way earlierrrr.....duno ,just my opinion.

then you got that phat saw thing......daz cool, but could be even more epic with mixing...

ok...and so i skipped thru the rest cuz i dunno, i didnt think anything was gonna happen.

as a first track...great track!! i liked the melodys and the rhythm...but it took you a long time(11min?) to say somthing that could have taken 2 or 3min...IMO....

but surprisngly interesting for a first attempt...goooood job braa. if you keep at it you shoud bethere in noooo time!!!

I'm planning to add some more instruments and percussion to it, don't worry.

I was kind of going for a Lucky Heather or Pablo Assassans sort of feel, where it starts off kind of basic and groovy, then slowly and progressively builds to a climax towards the middle (if that makes any sense--if you've heard either of those tracks, you'd know what I'm trying to explain).

i had a blast playing this track last night.

This is going to be hit, if you polish it a bit (production-wise) and add some variation...good work ! :)

myra keeps talking about this track so i figured i'd give it a listen.. :p

oh dude i've heard this track a few times. solid work, especially for a first production but like everyone else said, you should definitely shorten it a bit. sometimes it feels like it takes an unnecessarily long time to get from one element in the track to another. perhaps instead of phrasing your "transitions" (so to speak) from 16 measure phrases, cut it in half. i dunno.
