I bought the two Q trilogy soundsets and loaded them into my Micro Q.
The sounds are obviously very trancey and I've dipped into the Q for my latest couple of tracks and been pleasantly surprised. I like Waldorf synths, they have an amazing clarity to them.
My Micro Q is kinda buried in a rack and not as "in my face" and tweakable, like the Virus KC, Nord Lead 3, JP8080, Supernova II, so those synths get more usage than some of my other ones. They're also all jam packed with vengeance soundsets (except the SNII - I may pick up the soundset at some stage, but that synth has a totally different character and I'm not sure it's best suited to the vengeance style sounds. The SNII has the most incredibly deep bass sounds).
If you have the money to spend, you won't regret it. You'll know whenever you reach for your Q, there'll be solid sounds in there which you can use with a minimum of tweaking. I've never regretted a vengeance soundset purchase. |

Thanks for taking the time to create the comparison!
Yes, the Waldorf synths have that "sharp stick in your ear" type high end clarity to them. Which is just great for certain situations. The Komplexer sounds a little more Virusey in the high end, so maybe useful for different requirements.
(on a totally unrelated matter, I just won an ebay auction for a TB303. So I'm looking forward to playing with that. I've come close to picking up a 303 clone on occasion but was never too keen. I just wanna have the sound of a lot of my favourite tracks! I'm a patient man...there's a few things left on my list for when the right time and price come up, in the meantime I'll get a lot of good stuff done with what I have...) |

| In fact, Manual clearly said that the the Q rack / keyboard is MUCH better than the µQ, with the µQ still being better than the Komplexer. |

(His name's Manuel, not Manual - I was wondering, where in the manual did it say that?) He didn't definitively state they would sound different, he said the sounds "might" sound a little different between the Q and Micro Q. On ebay these days the price difference isn't huge. I figured the difference was being able to access all the extra controls. That'd be handy, having dedicated controls for all the parameters, but then again, none of my rack units have many one-function controls on the front panels (my Microwave XT does, but I'm using that as a table top synth rather than having it in my rack).
I've let some really good priced Qs come and go since the Micro Q sounds so damn good. I thought it was just the extra controls you're paying the extra bit of money for, since Waldorf claim the sound architecture is identical. It'd be interesting to hear a one on one comparison like the previous one in this thread. If it's as big a difference I'll definitely pick up the next Q that comes along. But currently a Q isn't on my "to buy" list. |

Used to have a µQ and sold it when the opportunity to buy a Q came up. Make of that what you well. ;)

I still have access to my old µQ; so if I am not too lazy and have some spare time should do that for you. |

Maybe should swap some patches sometime? Seeing as we have µQ/Q; µWave XT; Virus; JP-8080 and SuperNova II in common... |

Awesome awesome info here would have replied sooner but had issue with net connection. thanks for replying all, I am def considering purchasing one now just need to wait for a good deal on ebay!
I had a read of what manue said and he did mention a diff architecture and from asdfgs spot on comparison I can hear the kind of sound I would get, which sounds loads like the vengeance demo anyway, so more than happy to get micro q.
Does anyone know if there any big diff with the old vs the new phoenix version? As thomman.de are selling the new one at £350 whcih is a decent price for such good sounds. |

| It is a great machine, but I'd definately go for a second hand rack. The µQ is a PAIN to program, that's exactly why I got rid of it. |

My understanding is that the only difference with the Pheonix version is the new paint job (and limited supply) |

The µQ and the Q have slightly different architecture...the oscillators different programming and that is why you will get the difference in sound...it is not a huge difference but it is still present.
The difference in the Phoenix edition is that it has streamlined architecture programming....and is now 100 voices like the Q+. It is now completely different then the regular Q's. You can't use the same OS from the regular Q for the Phoenix or visa versa. The sound is the same though. Personally I love Waldorf but I'm not into the Q sound anymore. I hardly use it...but I'm sure I'll get back to it soon. |
