Need EDM style drums for live performance - any ideas?

OK, so I'm doing this live thing in a few weeks, it involves me with a guitar and hopefully some cool dance grooves, but thats the catch. I was going to set up my friend with some ensemble from Reaktor, but I can't find one which will work for me, they all sound too glitchy (remember that I have to be able to play guitar over the top, so it can't be too glitched out).
Does anyone have any ideas how I could get some live drums going which sound interesting and are mangled on the fly a little bit, but aren't TOO extreme?
I was thinking of running a kick loop (as something I can sync to) in live and then letting some reaktor ensemble handle to higher end, like snares hats 'n claps?
All ideas welcome.:D |

Yeah, the electribes are great, I had a chance to buy one ages ago and I wish I had...
But I really need a software solution for the moment, preferably something that I already have (like something in reaktor) because I can't afford any more gear at the moment.
Also, its only one gig and I don't have space in my home setup for any more hardware atm... |

| Ableton Live, would that not suit your needs? Also, Live Lite comes free with a bunch of stuff, it seems. |

| Yeah live's great and I can just run a battery midi loop, but I sort of wanted something more interactive and more "live" than just triggering pre recorded loops... |

well that's the cool thing about live.. it's super easy to record and playback on the fly. There's lots of tutorials on the net about doing this, and setting up midi macro programs for easy recording and playback. If you fancy yourself a keyboardist then a couple midi keyboards and a foot controller would work nicely. You can even turn a QWERTY keyboard into a foot controller to start recording and playback.
And since I just realized you wrote "and me with a guitar" you can forget the keyboard thing above and get a foot controller to record loops live then manipulate the fresh loop manually with filters and effects, or layer stuff. (haha, runon... eh) If you get creative with the midi programming you can have the laptop off to the side so it won't looks as though you're checking your e-mail.
Do you have access to a digital drumkit for your friend? One of my upcoming projects will involve pressure sensors on drumsticks to modulate effect depth. :) Should be fun.
(I write this not knowing how much you've used Live) |

:eyes: Cool, that sounds like an amazing idea!
But yeah, maybe I can have a fiddle with setting up some recording for the guitar, thats a really good idea... I mean, I can get a friend to handle the looping duties and I can concentrate on just playing, could sound really good... Will definately consider these ideas, thanx:) |

Also, have you considered one of those Roland guitar to midi deals? That, or the Yamaha learning guitar that outputs midi. Could put some people back with "WTF sound just came out of that guitar? |

| Yeah, I have thought about a MIDI guitar, but the tracking just isnt up to scratch... Unfortunate, but I'm happy with my keyboard when playing synth. Thats an interesting... foot controller too:D |

Ueberschall, Best Service, East-West, Toontrack, and many other companies put out drum sample packs you can use. Pretty much all the "drum" sample packs contain all the percussive elements.. kicks, snares, toms, hats, etc... Some have premade loops, some are single hits, some even come with MIDI patches ready to go. Load your prefered kit into a software sampler inside a software sequencer and have at it.
I'm assuming your friend would be manning the digital domain while you play the guitar? Consider something like this:

Map out the prefered kicks, hats, snares, toms, etc, to the pad, get him familiar with how to track stuff out in ableton, and you should be all set. Personally I'd get a kick off watching someone track out live drum loops via a pad, on top of a guitar. |

I would go the Electribe route (being an ES-1 owner I am of course not biased!). You can play it on the fly, it's reliable, load samples in to the ES-1 or ESX, you can play it with any midi controller (keyboard, drum pad etc.) as long as you map it which is easy, effects are good.
Just do a search on Youtube for some of the electribe vids, especially makeing beats in six minutes and some of the others where they are hooked up to other pieces of kit.
You can also integrate them well with DAW's, so if you need to produce or practice (by having the recorded guitar tracks pay back while you jam along with the tribe or vice versa) it's really easy. |
