Rogers portable hi-speed...

Does anyone have it? or have used it?

Likes and dislikes to it??

I just got a flyer in the mail today and was curious about it. I know it is something more recent that Rogers is offering and considering I spend most of my time away from home and on a laptop, I thought this may be something to consider instead of having my hi-speed just at home. Plus the flyer I got it is about 25$ cheaper than mine now.

Any thoughts at all?

If you plan on using Bit Torrent at all - dont. They do packet-shaping which greatly reduces the speed of your downloads.

I just switched to TekSavvy myself, and have been very happy since the switch.

I think they may be using WiMax, finally?

Looks pretty expensive. $50/month, plus a $100 modem cost. All for 1.5Mbps (less than 200KBps). The $25/month plan has super slow access.

Their 'speed chart' would lead you to believe that basic is just a bit slower than the regular, but if you know how to do simple math, you are paying 50% the price but getting 17% of the speed. They would love for you to get the basic because they don't have to pay as much for bandwidth, and you will probably be so frustrated by the speed, you won't use it all that much.

EDIT: Yup, I'm almost sure they are using WiMax. Why they are holding it back to 1.5Mb, is lost on me. Why not give your customers the full 5MB that it can handle? I guess they want you to get this AND their home service.

I have been with Teksavvy for a year and they are great (not portable mind you).

I got the rogers portable internet when it first came out. I used it for about 2 months before I cancelled it. I used it at work on nightshift at a steel mill a couple of times too. I'd just hide in the basement. It made those nightshifts go by a lot better. It worked better at work underground then it did at my house.

I'd get really slow speeds at home so I called customer service. The rep told me that because I was barely in range of a tower, I shouldn't have too good of a speed and the occasional disconnect. I don't know if this is true but if I were you I'd look into seeing how close/far away you are from a tower. It was new when I got it so there weren't many towers around or something(atleast that's what the rep said).

Sounds about right.

I just bought it for one of our sales guys at our work, so he can have internet in his car. Got a power inverter to give the modem and laptop power. Tested it out in different areas of Brantford, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Cambridge. Had pretty good signal. You have to be stopped when your using it though, because it switches from tower (someone was driving when I was on the laptop). It's not mobile internet, doesn't work good for that lol, because of the switching between towers that are closest to it. If your stopped though, your fine.

Works pretty good though. It depends if your close to a tower as to how good the signal will be, but it was pretty decent all around. If your having it in a home, just make sure it's near a window, have the side of the modem with the antenna facing the window, and your usually fine. I used it in our board room at my work, which has lots of windows, and had full signal. It does actually matter which way the modem is facing and where you are. You can turn it around and get a better signal, which you see on the top of the modem as the number of lights lit.

I just got him the Portable Basic for home, the business one. You don't need that if your just checking a few sites and email. It's only 125Kbps connection down, but the pages loaded fast as if it was cable basically for the most part $24/month. If it's just for your home stuff though, you will up the download, but then why wouldn't you just get cable? lol. If your actually using it for on the go with a laptop in a car like the reason I got it for, it works fackin slick. I mean, you have internet in the car, for $24/month, it's pretty fast, does what you want it to do. Can't expect much more than that unless you pay out your fackin ass lol.

Your obviously going to up the download speed if your download lots of , but for some surfing, and email, it works fackin fine.

Another friend of mine tonight when I mentioned it said about the speeds and that you cannot be moving, the modem has to be at a standstill.

Thanks for all the info everyone. :)
