I've experienced an earthquake back in 1993. It killed over 10,000 people in my state.

What's even scarier to me is that in the last 6 years, they've now had 3 7+ quakes in Peru - granted, it's sitting right on a massively active fault line, but still... that's a lot of huge quakes in pretty short period of time.

We obviously don't get them in Wisconsin - so I have no idea what they're like, but I imagine the big ones are pretty ing creepy. My roommate had lived in Hawaii for 6 months and they had a pretty large one while she was there (though it was the "norm" for many on the island), and just the way she described it sounded so eerie.

I've experienced two good-sized earthquakes, but nothing as big as that. What was nuts about the second one I was in was that you could literally see the ground ripple; think of a Looney Tunes episode when they show Bugs Bunny running around underground just pushing a mound of dirt around, then visualize a LOT of those little ripple things going the same direction. Absolutely nuts.

They say Seattle is supposed to have "the big one" eventually, but nobody knows when. Yay for living on the ring of fire!

How horrid :( My thoughts go out to the Peruvians.

don't think I've experienced anything higher than a 4 and this was on my 11th birthday

damn this sucks. fortunately, the tsunami after effect wasn't as bad as the one in the Pacific Ocean a couple of weeks back. but that's pretty surprising 3 7+ earthquakes in the last 6 years.

such a sad thing, especially since a lot of the death were in churches :-/ and many more may be caused by slowly getting elect and water back up and running.
