This happened to me once, except the noise was followed by and acorn hitting our back window. SURE... we do have an acorn tree, but usually our 2m veranda stops them from hitting the windows... Luckily I had a friend over. We investigated, armed with a broomstick and mop.
There was a guy in my back yard. lol.
