Over the years, there's been phases of different styled incorporated, trance was used a lot in the 99-2002 era, drum & bass style breakdowns were common in 1997 and before that early on. There's also pure breakbeat-hardcore which is what I first got into and I've done a couple of mixes of. Sounds very much like the sound you're trying to describe. Haven't heard too much of that style but I wish I have. Check out Ponder-Worldwide (Powerbrock Mix).
