Chechen 'organised' Politkovskaya killing
The killing of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya was organised by a Chechen crime boss, with the involvement of Russian police and security officers, Russian news agencies reported today.
Russia's Prosecutor General, Yuri Chaika, spoke at a news conference only hours after announcing that ten people has been arrested in connection with the murder, in October 2006, of Politkovskaya a critic of Vladimir Putin who exposed human rights abuses in Chechnya.
The organised crime group suspected of murdering the reporter may also be linked to the murder of central bank deputy chief Andrei Kozlov, Mr Chaika said. “We have evidence this group was involved in ... the killing of Andrei Kozlov,” he said.
The ten arrested in connection with the killing of Politkovskaya will be charged soon, the prosecutor said earlier today.
"We have made serious progress in this case," Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika told President Putin in televised remarks. "As of today, ten people have been arrested, and literally in the nearest future they will be charged with the commission of this grave crime."
Politkovskaya was shot dead in her Moscow apartment building in October. Her killing drew international attention, compounding concern about the safety of journalists and Kremlin critics in Russia.
The Russian president sparked outrage abroad when he seemed to dismiss Politkovskaya shortly after her killing, saying her influence on Russian political life was "very minor".
Mr Chaika did not identify those arrested, or say when they were detained. A Moscow district court approved the arrests of eight suspects in Politkovskaya’s killing on Friday, a spokeswoman for the city court, Anna Usacheva, said, suggesting the suspects were detained within the last few days. There was no immediate explanation for the different numbers.

The untold story of Russia is that its worse than that - police officers, tax men, bankers, government officials, pastors, media personalities, TV show hosts, etc. have been brutally murdered in Russia since 1991. According to your logic, it is so coincidental and terrible, that it must be Putin who is behind all of it. |

i find your selective scepticism truly remarkable. somebody should do tests on you, i think we could learn a great deal about the human mind.
do you have one side of your brain that writes in the 9/11 threads, and leave threads like this one to the other side? |

actually no, but i can understand how you could infer that from my post.
i read somewhere (and i'm still trying to source it) that Politkovskaya was one in a series of like a dozen journo's to be murdered since 2000.
whether it was Putin responsible i really don't think so.
Russian affairs, politcal and social, are so effed up it's hard to say anything conclusively but to say...Russia sucks. Russia has always sucked.
sorry, it's just how i feel. the evidence is overwhelming. |

Yes, it does suck in Russia right now. We need some tough changes implemented in Russia to stop the degredation of the culture and society. However, it seems like a strong government is a bad idea because it conflicts with Western ideologies of containing Russian interests. So, basically, nothing's really going to change there, not for a long time because of that. Only a strong government can restore some order in the country, Yeltsin's free will policies have done so much harm for the country. |
