Globally recognised as one of the most talented young producers and DJs to come out of the scene in recent years, Chris Lake has made the DJ elite sit up and take notice. His innovative productions, backed by the likes of Sasha, Sander Kleinenberg and Nic Fanciulli, in addition to his dynamic and energetic DJ performances, have given Chris a major platform on which to proclaim his undoubted talents.

2005 was a landmark year for Chris. His collaborations with Rhythm Code under various guises including Ramsay and LAB music and remixes of artists such as Delacy, Stretch and Vern and Quivver received critical acclaim from both journalists and clubbers alike. However, it was his solo productions which provided Lake mass exposure. His 'One Too Many' production got tongues wagging and received two radio plays from Pete Tong, but it was his hit smash 'Changes' that catapulted his name into the record boxes of DJs across the globe. Tong made the record Essential New Tune in December 2005 and was quick to proclaim Chris as the best thing to come from Scotland since Mylo. He has now broadcast the production eight times with this number going up on a weekly basis. Changes has also received airtime on Radio1 courtesy of Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and the Trophy Twins and is now licensed to Universal (Apollo) for worldwide release.

In 2006, Lake has setup Rising Music to release his own material. Rising 001 & 002 have already been immense underground hits, with Rising 001 staying in the Top 3 of DJ Downloads chart for a month. And with Rising 003 titled Release and remixes of Stretch and Vern Guttersnipe (Monotype), Rene Amesz Fragile (LMR), Onionz Burnin (CR2) and his incredible rework of Lifelike and Kris Menace Discopolis (Defected) set to follow, its quite obvious that 2006 looms large for Chris Lake.

Chris Lake

Chris Lake is a name synonymous with big beats, and that seems
to be just the way he likes it. Ever notorious for layering tracks
that make his audience of adoring, dancing fans feel like their
hearts will burst out of their chests, and making them eye
emergency defibrillators in the corner of the room, Lake’s
notoriety spans the globe thanks to his quick, clever remixes and
consistently original sounds.
Currently on a continental tour of North America, one of the
UK’s loudest, finest exports continues to spin to great style. “This
tour is just a great opportunity to play some good gigs in North
America and see a big part of the world I really know very little
about,” says the Brit, who so far has been blown away by Chicago
and Vancouver now that he’s half way through his gig list. Lake’s
gig at O Lounge is his only Ontario stop before hitting Montreal
and heading home. “There is not really much chance to rest. I fly
home Monday, arrive home Tuesday and have Wednesday to rest
before I leave for Ibiza on Thursday, Iceland on Friday and then
[back to] England on Saturday! After that, I finally have some time
to myself where I really hope to get stuck into some more studio
work and put together tracks for my album.”
Lake officially started DJing in 2000 in Scotland, though he
experimented successfully with production “a long time ago. I
think I was about 13 years old when I started to play around with
really cheap keyboards making sounds. That’s 12 years ago now!
All I’ve ever done is make noises!”
Banging loud all the way, Lake is open to the fact that he
almost gave it all up in 2005, experiencing some of the lowest
moments of his career. “I nearly gave everything up,” recalls Lake,
who worked as a postman for three years before taking the
plunge to DJ full time. “I was struggling to make a living, was
doing a full-time job as well as about 50 hours a week in the studio and felt I was killing myself trying to realize my dream. I
gave myself until the end of the year to make something happen,
or I would give it up and try to develop a [different] career.
“I think many people think I appeared out of nowhere in the
past two years but I really have been around a while! I guess my
music just got better!”
Lake’s ultimatum deadline pushed the final grain of sand to
shore and soon he was staring down the breakthrough he’d been
waiting for. After writing tracks like “Changes”, “Electro Retro”,
“One Too Many” and “Release”, his career hit the proverbial disco
ball and the crowds followed. He always, however, had the
support of his family and friends. “My family is very active in what
I do. My parents have been supportive since day one. My dad asks
me questions about every single thing I do, and they even went to
a gig last month, which they loved! My sister is great too, and
very proud. And my wife, who is also my tour manager, is working
on my album since she’s an extremely talented singer and
songwriter.
“I’ve befriended [DJ] Sebastien Leger,” continues Lake. “The
guy is such a talent! He’s my favourite collaboration project so
far. I feel very privileged to have worked with Seb as he has never
collaborated with anyone before. We get on very well and plan to
collaborate more in the future.”
Time spent at home after traveling everywhere from
Hamilton to Ibiza has studio time written all over it for Lake, who
is busily putting together his debut artist album. Featuring vocals
and contributions from his wife and other musical masters, Lake
says he can barely contain his excitement for the project. “I’m
really excited and have much more studio time planned. I can’t
wait to get it finished and get it out there.
“That’s half my problem,” continues Lake, who learned his
discipline and organization – not to mention got healthy and fit – while en route as a mailman. “When I want something done, I like
it done yesterday.
“Also, this next year holds plans to develop my label Rising
Music a lot more as well as more touring. I can’t say I’m dying to
collaborate with anyone specific, to be honest. I’m more the type
that, if something interesting comes up, I would do it but I’m not
at the point where I’m actively seeking collaboration projects.
“My biggest lesson has been that not every song needs to be
remixed! I’m learning that more and more, and am learning to
just let some songs be!”
