Hi everyone,
I've finished another track "TranceFormer", and I thought I'd post it for your enjoyment (hopefully).
I don't really know what genre it is, it may be breakbeat, but it may not. It goes through a few different phases, so the beginning is a little deceptive in terms of genre.
It is very different to my previous track that I posted here "Autumn Burn", so maybe people who liked that track will be a little put off by this one, but I wanted to try something different.
Anyway, comments are - as always - appreciated and I hope you enjoy!

PS
For those who enjoyed "Autumn Burn", I've now updated that song with a more interesting introduction and some minor tweeks ahead of its inclusion in a small EP I've been putting together. |

Hey, this is a really good track. Not sure what style it is, but I would call it progressive something, whether progressive house, or progressive Techno. I'm pretty bad when it comes to pinning down genres. I listen to the DI progressive channel all the time, and this is much like some of the stuff I hear on there. I like this style a lot. Breakbeat, but with a definite progressive feel.
Is that a real guitar? Sure sounds like it. Where did the vocals originate from? Anyway, great melodies and submelodies. What more can I say, I dig it. You've got talent for sure. Continue to hone those composing and arranging skills. Have you approached any labels yet?
I'm DL'ing the MP3 so I can listen on my studio headphones. I'm using some little walkman phones right now, so I can't really tell the total sound quality. OK, listening on my studio cans now, and I can find nothing wrong with the sound quality. Good job, keep it up! I really enjoy listening to this one. |

:) Yes that is a real guitar, its an old Ibanez run through a line 6 pod xt, its also got a basic ping pong delay on it.
The vocal is recorded as well, its a backing track I did for another song and then I was playing with it a bit and used it as the foundation for this song.
I am starting to think about labels, I'm still trying to decide if the song is of releaseable quality though...
Thanks for the kind words:) |

That's some really nice guitar work. I dig the tones you got out of the Ibanez and line 6, they really fit the song. I've been trying to incorporate some guitar into my music, but I hadn't quite figured out how I want to do it. Also, my guitar is set up for balls out distortion, so I'm limited a bit as far as clean tones. But anyway, I think you nicely incorporated a guitar into this kind of EDM, which isn't always easy to do.
I'm sure if you wanted to, you could get a digital label to sign this track. Most any label you apply to will see you have talent. If you want to go for a major label, well that's tougher of course, but worth a shot if you're up to it. The Indie label I deal with (link is in my sig below) is in a transition right now, so I can recommend them right now. Once they get their stuff together, things should be good. They are honest at least, and are hooked up with a prominent distributor. There are a lot of good Indie labels though, but I can't recommend any from first hand experience. There are a lot of bad ones too.
This is just my ideas, could be wrong, but I'm thinking a major label might want you to streamline this song a bit, toward the second half it seems to go off into too many directions. Personally, I like that, but it tends to lose people. There are a few parts in that second half that lose me a bit, because they divert too much from the rest of the song. Seems to interrupt the flow of the song. I might not think that though, after listening to it more, who knows. I hate to sit here and critique someone else's work, because I could be completely wrong. That's why I rarely post on this forum :tongue2
I'm going to check out Autumn Burn too. |

I do hear what your saying about the song going off in a lot of directions at once, one of the things I wanted to do with this song was get a whole bunch of different ideas and transform one into the other - hence "TranceFormer".
Thats why its got so many sections, the first with the reversed vocal then the second with the big bass which is bent all over the place, then the third which is stripped back to the tribal loop and the pads. Then it builds back up again and returns to the style of the first part.
It was inspired by Underworld quite a bit, I really like the way they get all those disparate elements and combine them into one song, I think it makes for really good repeat listening, although it does make the song radio UNfriendly. Perhaps I went to far with that concept?
Anyway, I'll check out some labels for sure, any recommendations for "major" labels? Do you mean MAJOR major like sony? Or more major trance labels like Anjunabeats? Any smaller labels that like this kind of music? Sorry, I'm a bit new to the whole label thing:p |

| in this context i would consider major as anjunabeats, armada, subliminal etc. If you send this out to labels, you migh as well send it to the big boys as well as the little ones. What have you got to lose? |

Great, that was what I thought, I guess my uncertainty about record labels comes from my rock background - we all get so used to aiming for Sony!
I agree with what you say about sending tracks out; if the tracks good enough for small label its good enough for a big label, although of course there is always your respect to lose:p
Which means I'm still just trying to decide if the song is good enough for a label! The length isn't such an issue for me, more the sound quality and programming, since I think the structure is (more or less) a feature of the song. |

Yes, major label as in an EDM label, like Armada, Bonzai, ect. I think it's better to build up a reputation on a smaller label, and get a lot of production experience under your belt before approaching a major label. In other words, be prepared for rejection.
About your song structure, do what you feel is best. Maybe we didn't understand what you were trying to accomplish. You'll get a bunch of different opinions here, a lot of it based on personal preference. It's liable to confuse you. It's really better to get the opinion of an industry professional, because they are the only opinion that really matters. Some of the major labels will even give you feedback on your music, even if they don't think your tracks are releasable at the moment. There are services that will give you feedback for a fee. I don't know if those are any good though. |

guitar and vocals are awsome.....too bad for the cheesy synths :(
like the one at 4secs, and 22secs. really not a fan of that sound.
really nice track though, maybe some sub bass would also give it some life..just a thought
nice job ;) |

I actually had this thought about a sub bass myself... But I decided to leave it for the moment, after all, you have to leave something for a remix later:p.
The synth sounds I chose based on what I thought would fit in that space, the big synced lead your talking about is probably quite cliched but I thought it sounded interesting in the space so I decided to leave it there. I'm still learning that side of things really, I'll keep practising.

I think a smaller label would be good, but I'll have a crack at the bigger ones too once I'm ready:p
I really appreciate the opinions I've gotten on this song, they're a good marker as to what I'll have to keep an eye out for in future. It's also nice to get a diverse bunch of opinions from different people with different tastes and ideas. And of course, the fact that we're now even talking about labels is encouraging:) |
