funny you said that, so many of my friends ask how what i thnk of hte the virus and i'm always like its amazing... but
everything is super processed, getting something raw/dry out of this thing is impossible.
but thats what makes the virus, a virus... 100 voice polyphony can make anything sound cool... however the natural wave forms on this thing aren't what most synth guru's are use to.
on that note, i've been on the hunt for a good price on a voyager for a while but nothing has caught my eye, i'm actually waiting for my se-1x to come in the mail any day now :) |

this sound weak to you? well i guess your right if the oscs weren't so weak this sound woulnd't be possible. Virus oscs are much too harsh for this sound.
you should try programming bass with your jp tho, you'll be surprised. |

The JP80x0 has a classic sound. Everyone has sounds that do it for them and sounds that don't. Hey, we're all different. Some people hate the sound of various pieces of expensive hardware, some people love the sound of various pieces of ultra-cheap hardware (like the TB303 used to be - people were literally throwing them away, but other people really loved the sound and could make use of it)
Most of the top producers loved the sound of the JP80x0, judging by the amount of it I can hear in so many classic tracks.
I agree, it can sound extremely digital, it can sound harsh, it can sound weak. But it sounds absolutely perfect in the right place. And there seem to be many right places. |

Sounds as good as the original to me! Maybe with alittle more 2.5k.
What other synth sounds like that with the filter fully open? |

There's no other synth that sounds like that. If you take a synth with a different sound engine, different effects, different filters, it's going to sound different.
(by the way - yes, the sample sounds "weak", it sounds exactly like a JP8080. It sounds perfect to me. Don't fight against what a synth is or isn't, in isolation. Work with what it is. The JP8080 is perfect in the right place) |

it's not a question about what synth can do the same sound. it's just that i don't like this exact sound from the jp-8080. (btw. you can improve your sound quite a bit with better adjusted delay and reverb settings)
and for me one of the biggest problem with the jp supersaws is that they don't cut proper through a complex mix. they just go under. |

Thats nonsense. It is your job as a producer to make it fit in a mix and make it cut 'through' or 'recess' it behind other instruments in the mix. If you can't do that then that is a failure on your part as a producer, not the instrument you use. |

yeah sure, but if you WANT to spend the time then do it. i prefer to use tools (synths) which help me to do my job faster. it's a given that every synth works better or worser in a mix. it's not a fault of the producer. |

and what does that mean? of course my mix should sound like i want it to sound. ;) i never said that you can't do it. i just said it makes no sense to use something when there are faster ways.
it would be the same when you create your bassdrum everytime from a sine generator and post process it. i prefer my own ready to use samples.. |
