X-Ray Harm
View this Thread in Original format
Dj Babe
Hi,

I was wondering if the X-ray's (let's say at an airport) can damage CD's ? Also electronics...

Thanks
Mr.Mystery
No they can't. There was that possibility back in the eighties when some cheap-ass machines used too powerful rays but the myth lives on to this day.

subjected to excessive x-rays you can suffer permanent impotency and hair loss

but thats ok as long as your cds are readable

Camera Film? Not that it matters with the abundance of digital cameras today, but I still use a '72 Nikon F.

There is absolutely nothing the machine will do damage to, except if you leave it on for an hour or so (or if you're using extremely sensitive film). The amount of rays the machine uses is very small. I've even gone through one myself :wtf:

what about hard-drives?

Well I've just had a look myself (yes at o4:50am). I'm the on call radiographer tonight in the x-ray department. Jusr blasted some CD's with 100kv and 500mAs (x-ray talk, which is a fairly whopping dose), and they worked fine afterwards. So my time tonight has been put to good use!!!

DJ HARN.

Lets see in week if disc still plays then we can honestly say it has no adverse effect form that high x ray dose. I bet it will still play in week from now.

i don't think the cd is going to get sick from the xray dose and die in a week...
