Are DJ Headphones optimized for DJ environment noise?

Right now I'm sporting Sony MDR-V300s, which is what I use to listen to music from my computer and portable MP3 player. I want to take the dip into buying some slightly classier headphones (circa $200) to continue using in the same fashion (listening to music at leisure).
I'm looking at all these "DJ" headphones and I just want to ask (before taking the plunge into my wallet), does the term 'DJ headphones' mean they are only physically optimized for DJs (Flip, fold, padding, 1/4"driver, etc), or will the audio sound vastly different than if I were to get a pair of headphones that weren't meant for DJs in the first place (such as Shure ear-buds)?
I only intend to listen to music straight from my computer + MP3 player, and would prefer over-the-top headphones. Is there a quality difference between equal price "DJ headphones" and Ear Buds? |

a nice pair of in-ear monitors will have good sound to them...but don't crank them...you'll go deaf before you know it...reason for in-ear monitors is so that you don't need to crank the sound to reference what your doing.
i use my sony mdr700dj ones for casual listing on the computer and they are nice...i like the pads on the cups that they cover my entire ear so it doesnt feel like its smooshed between smaller cups on other $20 dollar headphones. if its for lesuire listing...i personally wouldnt drop $200+ for good sounding headphones just for listning here and there |

get some good open ear headphones by senn.
dj headphones are just that dj headphones. good isolation and loud, thats about it. they are not the best for personal listening. |

The term 'dj headphones' normally means they are crap, heavy, overpriced, bulky and liable to break because of stupid plastic swivel joints.
Look at the best two pairs on the market- Sennheiser Hd 25 and Sony mdrv 7506 - neither is advertised as 'Dj headphones' yet they absolutely piss on every single other pair on the market in every possible way, both for Dj use AND personal/home listening.
Get one of those two and you won't regret it I promise you. |

| Yep open ear headphones sound better, but DJs need isolation for working in loud environments. |
