| because french fries are a Belgian invention. Some dumb must have called it "French Fries" by accident in the course of history... People find out stupid names for logical things all the time (eg: NEOTRANCE). |

Because in Belgium, they also speak French, and that's the reason why the soldiers in WWI called our fries, 'French' fries..

So logically, French Fries is short for 'frenched and fried potatoes'. In fact, the English call them 'chips', a word which has a similar meaning (a chipped piece of wood).

The 'french' in french fries doens't refer to France at all. To french is an english verb that means 'to cut in small pieces'; so small pieced potatoes.
If the French really think it refers to their country, it's because they're too imperalistic or patriotic. |
