Hello People of Japan,
I would like to know what you call those 'gate/arches' that are made of wood that you see in the water.
Thanks! |

Thanks, your image is what I was looking for, and a search for Torii on Wikipedia confirmed it |

Toori?

It comes from the verb "tooru", which means "to cross/pass"
Edit: Oh, just read Jackon's reply... oh, well, this post is still useful to point out the fact that it's got two "o", rather than two "i" :p |

Torii Gate, Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima is quite famous I think.
Hehe, I wanna go and see it...
Planning to go to Kyoto the Autumn/winter, I can`t wait! |

Is there a reason why you chose the write two "i"? This is the 3rd time I see an English speaker writing "toori" this way, and I'm beginning to wonder whether there is a phonological explanation behind it... |
