Remember back in the old days when Nintendo, Super NES, Game Boy, Genesis and Game Gear were one and all?
Remember how was it when Mortal Kombat 1 came out yet none of these systems were able to match or exceed the arcade quality?
Sure you didn't have to put a quarter or token (or 2 or 3 for that matter) in anymore to play, but
"It just isn't (wasn't) the same."
The same for Street Fighter II. The SNES and Genesis came very close but still...far from perfection. Remember that feeling (if you had it and share it with me...)

Super Street Fighter II Turbo is easily my favorite game of all time. Bar none. Best action, best graphics, best characters and (most importantly to me) best music. To this day, it's still my favorite game ever that I can't get enough of (I play it in the PS1 release of Street Fighter Collection.)
The hardware limitations of the old school systems prevented these games from being made arcade perfect. Far from perfect. Not even close.
Nowadays, the games being made meet and exceed arcade perfection. Adding in so many features the arcade versions didn't even consider including. SoulCaliber is an example.
But does anyone remember how aggravating it was to see how inferior the game's home version was compared to its arcade counter-part?
Might be a lot on my mind but I've always wanted to speak about this, because I absolutely LOVE the music in Super Street Fighter II but it was so SO inferior in the home version compared to the arcade. I even went so far as to go to Chinatown in New York City (back when I lived in New York in the early 90's) and buy the Arcade original soundtrack on CD, which I still have. The music is the same for both games, just FYI but I love TURBO more because of various additions, such as Akuma's first appearance, the Super Combos and Combo Finishes. I also happened to be the first kid in my neighborhood to discover how to do Akuma's Ashura Senkuu (The Ashura teleport/warp) at the time. :p It became a dominant part of my Akuma offensive/defensive and still is.
So...anyone feel me on this one...?

I miss arcades. We used to have 5 in my city. 3 in the malls and two around movie theaters, etc.
All of them died.
I still cry about it sometimes.

i never got crazy about arcades, but i do remember them fondly.
it makes it sad to go into a dave and busters as theyre pretty much the last vestiges of the 90s arcade-dom.
but most of the games are leftovers from that era too. arcade games used to blow most PC games out of the water, and now most arent even from post 1998...THATS lame|
I probably spent about $2000 in tokens on the above games alone...man those were the days:

There's a really, really sketchy arcade and pool hall near our house, but I haven't been there yet. Would probably only check it out in the daytime anyway :p
And yes, I definitely miss arcades.

The sketchiness of any arcade is what would give it its charm, would you agree?

I do in fact remember the days when arcades were all the rave. In fact, if it werent for Dance Dance Revolution in 1999, they'd probably already be dead. Those 'music interaction' games, such as DDR, that one drumming game, Beatmania, etc., are really the only games keeping arcades alive since buying all of those accessories for home consoles would be ridiculously expensive and just not worth it.
I can still remember in 1997 I believe it was when Mortal Kombat 4 first came out. How there were entire lines forming around the machine just so that people could get a taste of it....
But yeah, I feel ya DA on the lack of good arcade-to-home transitions back in the 90's. The one that pissed me off the most was Daytona USA on the Saturn. The arcade version was visually beautiful, whereas the console version looked like trash. Same can be said for a plethora of other games.

As always an insightful and well said post. My sentiments exactly. Daytona in arcade = gorgeous. Saturn = total crap.
I had actually gone to Dave N Busters this past Saturday night, and, for the first time in a very long time, I had this feeling..an insatiable need....
.....a need to fight.

And even then the ONLY fighting game they had was Tekken 4, which, don't get wrong isn't a bad game, but it just doesn't have the appeal that 2 & 3 did. (I didn't like the first one too much.)
Of course there weren't any Mortal Kombat games (since DNB is a family place) but I find that kind of hypocritical because DNB DID have House of the Dead 3 AND 4. Uh hello? This game has a lot of nasty gore, too, or hadn't the DNB management zipperheads in' noticed?

yeah DnB is a family place, but if youre under 21 you cant get more than 5 feet from your parents...and you know that arcades lend themselves well to youngins calmly walking with their parents.
plus, with how much it costs to go there, maybe you should try to buy an old machine? kinda takes away from the challenge of playing random people tho|

The only arcade games I ever played and beat or did well in were Primal Rage, House of Dead, and my all time favorite Street Fighter Vs Xmen which totally pwns any other arcade fighting game.

Seriously. DNB is so anal like that. The DNB our crew used to frequent, they wouldn't even let you in without getting carded. WTF, this ain't no goddamn nightclub! For sake.
The unpredictability of fighting random people is part of what made fighting games so great and fun back then.
There's this other arcade place called Boomers in South Florida which had a much bigger and better selection of games compared to DnB (not to mention, they weren't as strict as DNB) but I haven't been there in years, so who knows what it's like now...
Heh...maybe I'll check it out this weekend.

I still remember when I learned how to pick Akuma in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and I was fighting a human opponent who had no idea who it was I using.
"Who is THAT??" :wtf: They asked.
"Ryu and Ken's sensei's brother..."
And I would dodge the hell out of them with my Ashura Senkuu. Then SA-LAM them with my Shakunetsu Hadouken.
