First Success

Last night I played in front of an audience for the first time at a friends 18th. It was a total success, at first I was a little apprehensive because most of the parties we have been to lately have been used as a chance to get way too drunk and sit outside looking surly making everyone get really down but last night it was different.

The birthday boys brother had mixed an hour or so long house set that he wanted to play so we opened with that running it off an i pod through my mixer and that got a few people dancing but as soon as I mixed out of the last song on his set the crowd really came in, I know it was corny but I opened with DJ Joop - The Future(DJ Stantom Remix Version) but it worked like a charm, about 50 people filed into the hall and began dancing.

As with most 18th's there was a break about halfway through for a happy birthday and speech from dad etc. as soon as that was over the people on e were starting to peak so I started playing hard style and they went off.

The last two songs of the night, DJ Merlin No Alternative (feat DJ C-Base) and DJ Pavo - 99.nine, really got everyone pumping, so much so that when they were over everyone kept dancing all trying to sing the synth lines of the last song.

I had about 10 people throughout the night come up on stage and tell me how good everything was going and how good the energy on the floor was so I was really pleased. I couldn't tell what the sound was like where everyone was dancing because we were in a hall where all I could hear was a really bad reflection from the far wall so I had to mix all night in the headphones (I hadn't enough time to set up a monitor for myself but I guess you live and learn)

The lighting went down like a charm, we had a fogger with a green laser, a four foot black light and a few large club lights but they were really to bright so didn't get much use. I spent a lot of time giving out glow sticks in a effort to get people to come and dance and it worked really well, I even got some sweet photos.

I was using 2 CDJ 200s , a Vestax VMC 004FX mixer, all I know is that the speakers we were using had 15" horns and were powered by a nice 750 W amp

The laser was awesome

and of course, best bit, people were dancing!

Not everyone was on drugs, I even had at one point my friends mother out dancing and to quote her " Just don't play too much of that doof music". I think she had changed her mind by the end of the night.

why do you feel the need to post your glory story of spinning your friend's birthday party?

post when you get a gig next to bono at a charity event in mozambique

this is probably something i wouldn't tell people.

honestly, we're anonymous people on the internet who probably don't care. maybe if there was some good story about how the power went off and you had to run the party through a steam turbine or that one of the etards gave your friend's dad a lightshow and tried to hook up with him we might be interested.

other than that save it for people who know you for real ... just my two

That's not the point.

I just think it's a little sad that people feel the need to do drugs at an 18th birthday party.

and apparently at a family party with the mom dancing and the dad giving a speech, etc. i would get pissed tbh if i had a party with my family there and my friends were all rolling. i don't know if things are different in australia though :tongue2

edit: and i'm not trying to bash you.. i for one haven't spun for any sort of audience yet, so congrats on that... we all start somewhere.

yeah it seems weird to me too, drugs at a family party?

sorry to be an ass,

but i think you should know there are probably better outlets for your excitement.

and that you should definitely aim to do a parent-less party at some point
