EA's Skate getting decent reviews.

Seems to be doing alright with the press - has anyone actually played it yet?

I'll be shocked if this turns out to be a fun game - I can't imagine a skating "sim" being all that fun, but stranger things have happened.

From the first time I heard about it, I just assumed that this game would be absolutely atrocious. I haven't even bothered to look into it, since I lost interest in skating games after THPS started throwing in 50,000 new ways to extend combos (see: your note about people who spend all day mastering online games). How does a 'skating sim' even work?
CONNERMAN2000
It scored a 9.0 on IGN if I'm not mistaken. A pretty hefty score considering none of the recent Tony Hawk iterations have been received as well as that. I might check it out...

same thing here. Its control its what sets this game a part.

IMO it looks like it's gonna be pretty fun, the maps are huge and very nice looking, with alot of details, and the lighting is fantastic. I'll have to try it to see if the control interface matches, but I hate most of the Tony Hawk series and this looks like it could be the first skateboarding game that is ACTUALLY ABOUT skateboarding...

I probably care more about reviews than most people who post here, but I'm not made of money and just moved to a new house in a big city.

In adult-land, video games take a back seat when things like beds need to be purchased... :(

got this a couple days ago. its pretty fun. takes some time to get used to the controls and timing and stuff but after that it's awesome. i didn't want to stop playing last night but it was getting late and i had to wake up this morning for work. some of the flip tricks are pretty hard, but i guess you gotta practice them. its not like thps where you can just push a button and it does whatever trick, you have to do it with the right thumbstick, which i guess makes it more rewarding when you eventually learn the tricks, haha. the controls are very exact though, so that might get annoying or something but ive played it for 2 days now and i love it. you can do some ridiculous tricks like 540 triple kickflip off a hip but its just different from thps, im that good at it yet, but i dont think there are million point combos. its hard enough getting like a 600 point combo. as i skater myself (hehe), i find this more realistic.:)

its a real cool game. like said in the post above, the controls take a while getting used to and even the most basic tricks that you can do in 'Tony Hawk' might take a couple hours to perfect in 'Skate'. Thats where the whole sim-like gameplay lies.

The fact that Skate lets you roam a huge map is a huge plus as well. I have had the game since it came out and even though u have this huge world to roam, i still spend 2+ hours on a rail or something rather stupid. The fun-factor is A+.

lol i always wondered why thps got so ridiculously unrealistic
like i'm talkin i had underground 2 for the xbox and i got like a 6 million point combo at one point i think?
idk i'll have to look it up
might've been more

Downloaded the demo from Xbox Live, really impressed with it (except the 30 minute timer on the demo).

Compared to the THPS series this is so much more realistic, the control system definately takes a while to get used to though. I don't know if you can change the camera angle in the full game but it was really winding me up when playing the demo; the camera sways all over the place and the skater takes up a fair chunk of the screen, which at times made it difficult to see where you're going/skate in a straight line.

Beside that though, it's a fun game and it's on my list of games to buy.
