(just my opinion)
I am still not a fan of DJs who do their sets on a computer. Don't get me wrong those who play only their productions get added props from me but the ones that just simply mix other's tracks on a laptop just doesn't do it for me.

I think it really depends on the effort put forth when using laptop software. Transitions can be much more clever and smoother on a regular basis, depending on how you have the software setup. You can do live mashups, etc etc.

I have seen some DJs who are just lazy in Ableton. I have seen some who are very clever (ie. Sasha).

Ableton simply plays the tracks (for me). Mixing is still done with the mixer. :-p

In the end, other than some trainspotters, most people (casual clubber) don't care what the music is coming out of so as long as the set is killer and you are actually doing some legit work on the mixer and making the transitions and other things. You know, interacting with the music in some way instead of it just playing out of the laptop.

I think a couple years ago it was a different story because laptop DJing was so new....but it's becoming more common as time goes by and people don't see it as an odd setup anymore. Still waiting for J00F to go around using Ableton. I swear he said he was gonna make the switch at once time.

For me the choice to use Ableton came down to one thing. Money. I am not made of it. I don't have money to spend on CDDJs and whatnot. Especially with a kid now. I was able to get Ableton through our sound engineer at work who got a copy but didn't have a use for it so he gave it to me. If I had the money to buy CDDJs, I would have a long time ago. That's how I would have loved to get back into DJing when I decided to, but alas it wasn't really an option for me. So I have Ableton and sticking to it.

Don't respect my choice. It's fine. But in the end, as long as 90%+ of the crowd doesn't have a problem with it, neither do I!

Funny, I would have used Sasha as an example for the former.

Really, if theres anyone out there doing less than he is with Live, God help them...they must not be doing much of anything at all... :p

Well, maybe he just turns it on when he wants to...it probably looks like he's not doing as much as peeps might think since a lot of the control is done right on the mixer.

Plus it's Sasha...he's sly. Can make anything look easy when he wants, lol.

Every now and then he does some crazy (see 05 essential mix) but most times I've seen him live its pretty minimal. He just doesnt put as much effort into it as he could and he gets lazy most of the time. When you're mixing between looped outros/intros on ableton for 2 minutes...it kind of defeats the purpose...
