well I figured I this is the right forum since its the DJ booth, but yeah, Ok well in radio you can not play a song by the same artist withing a certain amount of time (i dont know the specifics off the top of my head) but I was wondering if any of you knew if that applied to a set which contains songs by the same DJ / producer in a row?
Example: Aly & Fila @ ASOT 300:
01. Aly & Fila Present A&F Project - Uraeus (Frase Remix)
02. Mark Eteson & Jon Prior - Dynamic Stability (Aly & Fila Remix)
03. Deems - Tears of Hope (Aly & Fila 2007 Remix)
04. Aly & Fila Present A&F Project - Ankh (Breath of Life)
05. Aly & Fila vs. Amadeus - A Dream Of Peace (John Askew Remix)
06. FKN Featuring Jahala - Why (Aly & Fila Remix)
07. FKN vs. Aly & Fila Featuring Jahala - How Long
08. Lost Witness vs. Sassot - Whatever (Aly & Fila Remix)
09. Aly & Fila - Eye of Horus (Ronski Speed Remix)
10. DT8 Project - Hold Me Till The End (Aly & Fila Instrumental Mix)
11. Ben Gold - Rollcage (Aly & Fila Remix)
so could i not play that set because aly and fila are all over it? |

having worked in radio myself, i can honestly say i've never heard any rule about playing artists in a row or close to each other
also, it's generally not a problem when producers play their own stuff, hence why there's aly and fila all over an aly and fila mix |

Just lol, where do you come up with this stuff? Go look at any EM and tell me that Dj's don't play whole EP's in their sets. There is no rule about "promotion"...radio IS promotion. While it isn't/never has/never will be a rule (you think Bodzin will play other peoples stuff?), it does make you a DJ if you play all that stuff and don't research your tracklistings(see creativity). The only thing tracklists like those tell me is why would i hire some guy to play other peoples music if I could just play their artist CD. Now I admit I am not a fan of Trance, but has it gotten to a point where that is the only choice of things to play?
Don't be like Dj Nabisco, Dj Cocoa Puffs and DJ Gold Bond Medicated Powder...if they wanted a set by those guys they would ask no? |

| There's no rule but I personally don't like it, even if it is the artist playing their own tracks, ala Tyas and A&F at the latest big ASOT. I mean FFS  |

In LA radio, playing songs by the same artist in the same block is a big NO NO. My best friend works over at KIIS FM and they won't allow it. KSSE 107.1 (Super Estrella) won't allow it either. I know that because I've done a few mixes for them.
Actually, most stations in LA give you a list of song where to choose your set from.

i highly doubt it's an official regulation. it's just generally considered not a good idea because you'll start to anger other artists and labels who will accuse you of payola or something |

I'm guessing Ksse & Kiis are those typical play pound top 40 up peoples gullets non stop until they force things into hits, all the while trying to maintain an "loledge" by playing boom boom music a few hours when nobody is really listening every week? They tell you what songs to pick, because that is what radio stations like that do, and you are you. If some International DJ would get a slot, they would be told to off if they presented them with a list of tracks they have to use. (see well timed payola post above)The thing is now, The Dj game has started to become the same way.
Let me let you in a little secret (bas will flip but wtvr). Big name Dj's do not always choose what they play.John Digweed for example is spoon fed tracks by Damian Lazarus. These guys are smart and play to market the music not to be innovators anymore. It has happened to top 40 (can you say this generation has music that will be looked back upon and revered like the classic rock of the 70's/new wave of the 80's/grunge alternative ...), it is what happened to trance, and through beatport it is what is happening to every single genre bit by bit. (how many people are playing the same right now, or god forbid only their own tracks like that hack Stephane Bodzin...Playing your own stuff ISNT DJ ing). So none of this really has any relevance to this thread, other than Cookie Monster you need to BE DIFFERENT. Stop worrying about what others play and try to come up with a concept of your own. If anyone wonders why I posted all this stuff, this thread seemed the silliest one in here at the moment. I just needed to make myself really angry after spending the whole night awake ripping german records to get myself in the mood to throw down something hard and original before it gets onto beatport and people are butchering it by mixing it with pvd and samim heater. If i am really lucky i'll even get to post the sets before greg downey and sean tyas add their magic touch to it. The best thing is i just saved a whole lot of money by swithching to geiko.
