It's been said/rumoured for a while (since March-ish?) that the next Cubase update will have free routing/side-chaining etc.
For those Cubase 4 users, if you haven't heard already. Cubase 4.1 should be released October/November (after Nuendo 4 scheduled to be released end of Q3, lulz how many days left now?).
Here's a thread from the Cubase.net forums:

I'm a Cubase 4 user - not Nuendo - primarily wondering if Cubase 4.1 will have sidechaining.

Back in March Chris posted this:

Hello,
Sidechaining is coming with the next update. And it works without a problem. We had a little demo at Steinberg by the programmers.

Chris Beuermann is one of the Steinberg guys/mods on the boards there.
Also another guy confirmed the new routing features as well...

Hi guys.
When I was down at AES in Vienna back in May Fredo and Martin was nice enough to give me a demo of Nuendo 4. Among all the new stuff they also showed me the new routing functionality and sidechaining. Trust me when I tell you that you won't be disappointed, is so flexible.
As I do not really know what I can tell you so I'll better stop here. I do not wnat to have one of the managers from Steinbergs showing up at the office tomorrow!   |
Read the thread and you'll get a better handle of things. Steinberg is notoriously stupid when it comes to PR and CS sometimes. Probably the reason why Pro Tool dominates the market.
Anyway. I am really stoked, and I'm sure the rest of the C4 users on here are as well. Thought I'd share.
Peace,

Meh...
They said Q3 for 4.1. Now it's Q4, which will probably end up being Christmas. I've given up on berg and started using Reaper. :p |

No one will disagree with you about Steinberg being stupid though. |

ill not buy it unless it has sidechaining. fed up with cubase delivering underpower programs. id use logic if i could afford a mac but since im so used to cubase i cant use any other pc based programs i tried the demos of. still on sx 1 :o |

Well then ster, I already own it, and when I update to 4.1 and it HAS the promised routing capabilities... I'll let you know. |

the release candidate has a working implementation of sidechaining and free routing. ;)
and btw. logic is just way, way, way behind all other daws featurewise. so don't complain about cubase it's one with the most cutting edge features. |

Hmm. Where did you get a copy of that Mr. Cyrus? |

The only thing logic is MUCH better are the plugins. Logic is complete out of the box but like cyrus said, not much has changed since 5.5 feature-wise. |

Other than stamp an Apple logo on it?
WRONG THREAD FOR THIS DISCUSSIONNNNN. |

I'm hoping for a massive price drop to accompany the new version :toothless |

I don't think you can knock EXS24 either ... I find it very handy |
