well, here is a *general* tennis thread now...
we still have the other ones for the major Grand Slams (Aussie, French/Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US), but never have had one for general tennis info.
this will keep my (and others? lol... maybe... there are a select few of us out there on here :)) tennis-related posts all together, instead of needing to create separate threads!
:) so... enjoy tennis watching and playing, and post here whatever you find or interests you tennis wise! ;) |

WOW, here's an intense article about shenanigans some young tennis juniors got up to and the consequences they're facing bc they are under the spot light, public figures representing their sporting profession...
i cant imagine being forced give up so much, i think too often little is though of such things as this which young kids and teenagers are forced to give up to pursue their grand tennis dreams! (which in my opinion is part of what being a teenager is all about... reading about these exploits certainly doesnt surprise me... this is what highschool is like, what happens)
i dont know that i could do it.

British Tennis
by Jonathan Overend - 26 September 2007

Make no mistake, Naomi Broady and David Rice aren’t the only ones.
The two talented British juniors have been named and shamed after being suspended by the LTA in the storm over website revelations.
But many more kids were up to the same tricks and should count themselves hugely fortunate not to be exposed in the same way.
The bad news for Broady and Rice was that previous indiscretions are believed to have counted against them and this was the final straw for their LTA paymasters.
Lots of their friends, who also receive LTA funding and coaching, will now be on final warnings because, in some cases, their photos were just as bad.
There’s the 16-year old taking pride in his dubiously-coloured drink in a nightclub, the 17-year old on a street clutching an empty bottle and the teenager racing around a La Manga supermarket in a shopping trolley.
There are lively photos from a party after a Girls Aloud concert, a player baring his backside in a railway station and a boy who calls himself “fatty” in a photo surrounded by pizza boxes.
It’s not so much the various pranks which have disturbed the LTA - they are teenagers after all - but the sheer stupidity of publishing them to the world on the internet.
So brainless is the behaviour, the presumption is that the players aren’t fussed whether they make it as athletes or not.
All this is especially harsh on Rice because his only incriminating photo saw him sitting on a sofa with mates holding a can of lager.
But Broady - despite her suspension - should count herself fortunate. The full content of her online photo album was disturbing, given she is only 17.
She’s lucky the photos she published from an LTA employee’s birthday party haven’t been leaked.
She’s fortunate the full transcript of her MySpace questionaire hasn't come out.
If she truly believes it’s ok to put this stuff on the internet, then she probably doesn’t believe she’ll one day become a tennis pro and a celebrity sportswoman.
So are these isolated indiscretions or are they typical of a wider crisis with loose-cannon juniors?
Over the past 48 hours many stories have circulated of unconfirmed previous incidents.
Several players were allegedly sent home from a La Manga training camp in disgrace a few years ago.
Witnesses report a couple of players ordering late-night pizza and coke just hours before stepping out to play in this year's Junior Wimbledon.
There are also rumours that two players were caught in bed together at the National Tennis Centre prompting a suspension.
But this is where the LTA come in and have to accept their part of the blame.
The new National Centre is a wonderful facility, with the best back-up any player could wish for, but the on-site accommodation means that, after dark, a “Student Union” type atmosphere develops.
They have to supervise and manage the kids better, lifestyle coaching sessions must be stepped up and, most pressingly, the man from Dominos Pizza shouldn’t be allowed through the gates at night. It’s pretty scandalous he was accepted in the first place.
This whole episode has been about trying to get a positive reaction from the offending players.
When Bill Sweetenham first took charge of British swimming he was shocked to find a similar party-culture.
After he suspended a few people, he waited. Some he never saw again, and he wasn’t surprised, but some returned - tail between legs - and became stronger and better for the experience.
Everyone in British tennis hopes the latter will be the case because these players are wildly talented, just stupidly naive. |

Tennis sex teenager 'threatened by coach'
By Megan Levy and agencies
Last Updated: 3:46pm BST 02/10/2007

A schoolgirl who had a lesbian relationship with a leading female tennis coach when she was 13 has told a court how she was "threatened" into having the affair.
Former professional player Claire Lyte - the Lawn Tennis Association's young coach of the year in 2001 - is alleged to have seduced the girl when she was her coach between 2005 and 2006 in Loughborough.
The alleged victim's mother walked in on Lyte and her daughter having sex in the teenager's bedroom after a tennis tournament, the Liverpool Crown Court jury has heard.
Lyte, 29, a former Wimbledon competitor who gave up professional tennis after an injury, has denied five counts of unlawful sexual activity with the girl.
Giving evidence in Lyte's trial today, the girl, now 15, said she "never wanted to do any of it" and was scared her tennis career would suffer if she told anyone.
"(Lyte) told me what to do," the girl, who cannot be named, said.
"She said if I was to say anything to anybody she would hurt me and she would stop my tennis completely and would tell the academy to get rid of me."
David Mason, for the defence, asked the girl why she had not spoken about Lyte's alleged threats when her mother walked in on the pair.
He also questioned why she initially lied to police in her first interview by saying the incident in October 2005 was a one-off.
"I was still terrified of what would happen," the girl said. "I wanted to carry on with my tennis, it was always what I wanted to do."
Lyte, of Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands, was given an official warning by bosses at the LTA academy about her closeness to the young girls under her pupilage in 2005.
After the girl's mother walked in on the pair, Lyte remained the girl's coach and continued to attend tennis tournaments with the girl and share accommodation for almost a year afterwards.
Lyte's defence says the allegations had been manufactured by the victim's "pushy and ambitious" mother because she was upset about her daughter's time at the tennis academy coming to an end.
The case continues. |
The the daughter is saying now sounds kinda fishy to me as i read this article... seems like it could be the mother influencing her daughter to say such insinuations (now years later... why didnt this come out before?!?!?) to really play up the whole thing... get more out of it.... |

| I used to play tennis hardcore all the time, but I haven't in like 4 years now. Used to go as far as Michigan to play. I actually got pretty good, but now I probably suck haha. This guy at work keeps asking me to play him because he knows I used to play, but I'm too lazy lately lol. I have tennis courts literally right across my street that we pay for, but I haven't been on them in forever. Fack! :( lol |
