What, for Rogers?
You'll hear about the increase in price sometime soon too...
I know of a few other companies offering DSL/cable access to the net, but some of them have the same politics as Rogers (if you don't subscribe to their TV service then you gotta pay $10 extra or some stupid like that), or I haven't heard much about them in regards to their speed/customer service... but anyway, you can check them out:

I was paying 65 bucks for Cable internet and cable but that was an extreme sale. VIP is like 75 bucks on its own and then 34 for internet. That friggin expensive.
Fantom, I checked all of those out and they are all in the Toronto area. But I will look into things like that here except I'm pretty sure that Rogers holds a monopoly on the cable market. |

All right, just a question for anyone out there that might help me too... I am on Rogers Cable right now, and since I will be moving soon to a place where I won't need their TV service, I don't feel like paying $55 a month for the internet itself (with a crap service and uptime that comes with Rogers). So, can you recommend any other providers that are comparable in price and speed (up to $50 a month)...?
Bell Hi-Speed is my last option, since their speeds just suck ass too... and yes, a private T1 line would be great, but I can't afford something like that (yet). |

wells DSL has slow upload because the connection is asymetric .. so ur (supposed) to get a slower upstread speed. and if rogers catches you uploading a lot on a personal server you could be banned as well ..
and if u guys are really lookin for an alternative you might wanna wait for SonaPort so try not to go on a contract with ur existing ISP.
and yes Rogers does have a cable monopoly. DSL however doesn't since third party carriers are allowed to lease Bell lines due to deregulation which is why you have companies like Primus and Sprint although they haven't yet begun to implement DSL service. and my friend at Rogers also told me that the worse areas in terms of speed for cable is the former Shaw areas.
btw. if any of you guys are looking to complain about your service there is actually a non-profit users association for broadband customers. here is their site :

I live near Queensway and Royal York
I'll tell you one thing my cheap building can't get rogers for one thing, as soon as it would I would Swith like that
But on a Note...A couple months ago while I was downloading long mixes here from tranceaddict or audiogalaxi, my connection was getting dropped, I kept on getting pissed, phoned bell and after the 5th call of bitching @ them, well I think they might of fixed it, As someone mentioned before Stay Away From Sympatico!!!
Beware... |

For everyone out there with Bell HighSpeed:
| quote: | Sympatico HSE to cap monthly downloads to 5GB
Tracking of bandwidth activity will begin in June 2002.
Included in your access charges is 5 GB of upload and 5 GB of download, usage beyond this is subject to an additional charge on your Sympatico statement, starting with your July billing statement.
Members who use more than 5 GB per month will need to pay for their additional usage.
For every GB used over your available 5 GB upload and 5 GB download, an additional charge of $7.95 will be applied. Bandwidth charges will be pro-rated down in 100-megabyte increments, that way, you are only charged for the bandwidth that you use.
^^ The above was on their page but it was pulled within a few hours, here's an article on it:
Sympatico bit cap FAQ fuels speculation
By JACK KAPICA
Globe and Mail Update
Speculation that high-speed Internet service provider Sympatico is contemplating changes to its service plan heated up again Wednesday as it briefly posted a document describing limits on how much its customers can upload and download.
The limit or "bit cap" described in the posting said Sympatico's high-speed users would be allowed 5 gigabytes upload and 5 gigabytes download per month. So far, the company has enforced no such limits.
The document, posted as a "frequently asked questions" or FAQ information page for users, was taken down within hours of its discovery. A copy of the page was obtained by Globetechnology.com.
Sympatico denied there is a bit cap in place, but confirmed that a page describing bit caps had been posted "inadvertently" early in the day.
Bit caps remain one of a series of possible changes Sympatico will make in the way it services its high-speed customers, spokesman Andrew Cole said.
The new services will be announced in "a few weeks," he added.
Also mentioned in the document was a "bandwidth activity tracker," a metering system that would allow users to monitor how much traffic their surfing has generated.
The document stated explicitly that Sympatico does not object to subscribers using peer-to-peer file-sharing programs, such as Morpheus, Kazaa or AudioGalaxy, as long as they do not leave them running continuously.
Anyone leaving such a program running is offering the contents of shared folders to anyone else around the world. The volume of traffic generated by this activity would count toward a user's total for the month.
The FAQ states that "there is no limit to the amount of data you can upload and download," but adds that anyone exceeding the bit caps will have to pay extra. No rates are mentioned in the document.

Interesting fact, Jazz... I guess if I had sympatico, I'd be paying around $300 a month for it, with all these downloads/uploads I have.
Damn corporate bastards... |
