The length and difficutly of the game plus the masks and their different abilties were something new and different. Having to travel back and forth through time, the addition of a helper log, the final boss and Diety Link :eyespop:

My cousin had that one, and it was kinda hard. Then we found a cheatcode that gave you 99 lives, was a little easier.

The Internet didn't really change the difficulty of gaming for me, because I still refuse to use walkthroughs and cheat codes during an initial play of a game. I either figure it out on my own and beat it, or I never finish... just how I am.
