3.8-Kilowatt JL Audio Gotham G213 Subwoofer is The Mother of All Subs

The long-awaited Gotham Home Theater Subwoofer G213 from JL Audio is finally shipping, and judging from its formidable spec sheet, it might be worth the wait if you feel like simulating an earthquake that can be felt within a radius of a half-mile. Billed as "The Mother of All Subs," to call this a powered subwoofer is almost an understatement, because its pair of 13.5-inch subwoofer drivers have an astonishing 3800 watts of power slam-dunking them, showing no mercy, straight/no chaser.

This 34-inch-high monster weighs 360 pounds and has 1.1-inch walls, presumably to keep it from exploding, and each speaker's fiberglass cabinet is so meticulously built, it takes an entire month to put one together from beginning to end. Then when you (or a crew of piano movers) schlep it into your listening room, you electronically set it up with an automatic room equalization system complete with microphone that figures out exactly how much subwoofer you're going to need. Just add just the right amount of cowbell and $11,000, and you're good to go.

...which yet goes to prove that if you build it, they will come. (chicks, that is). I bet any alive woman would get a brain-rattling 0rgasm, every time this thing goes "booom".

Oh, and it's probably good for cleaning out your house too, as couple of low end notes and you got no house to clean. Very practical solution.

idiot question: um.... what's the target market for this? the hip-hop community? Stereophiles? Idiots with too much cash? All of the above?

holy shit JL Audio. I want to have your babies. $11K though, jesus christ...

could be worse, i've seen a $40,000US speaker cable...

^^^ To be honest, you can hear a difference in speaker cable if you have a decent system (but I'm not sure how much of a difference there is between $40k and something around $300).

These subwoofers seem like a huge overkill, especially for home theater where the bass doesn't have to be very precise.

I wonder if Walmart sells these...?

Lol. I'm sure Radio Shack does.
Seriously though, that's some punch for a home system. Last time I read about a ridiculous subwoofer was the one where it supposedely got down to 10 Hz...earthquakes and nuclear explosion range.
Anybody remember what it was called?
T-Soma
No doubt it would be so damn fun to have.

yeah but who even bothers recording an accurate signal below 20Hz

For $11000 I can get 4 JBL SRX728s (2x18 sub) and 4 SRX722s (dual 15 midhigh) and rock a fairly sizable venue.

Or I could buy this marketing-hype sub from a car audio vendor and shake a small room.

Hmmmm... :conf: :haha:

JL is overrated junk. the only reason it has a good rep is that the rest of the car audio manufacturers are worse. 2 drivers for a home setup is a ridiculous design. and the efficiency on those overpriced drivers is low. and dont get me started on those stupidly oversized rubber surrounds - all they do is lower the effective surface area of the cones.

for a proper sub, at proper price see here:
