Cab riders may want to buy a MetroCard - another taxi strike could soon become a reality.

Hundreds of cabbies authorized a second strike in the coming weeks to protest new technology mandates by the city, according to sources who attended a mass meeting early yesterday morning at CUNY's Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies.

If a second strike is called, it would take place before Oct. 1, sources said.

About 350 cabbies who work the night shift attended yesterday's gathering. The Taxi Workers Alliance will hold another meeting for day-shift drivers at 10 a.m. Saturday at the W. 43rd St. institute.

"We're keeping all of our options open," said a driver who attended yesterday's meeting.

Alliance executive director Bhairavi Desai declined to discuss possible job actions. She said it's "beyond insult" that City Hall has refused to meet with driver leaders since the walkout.

The city Taxi and Limousine Commission required yellow cabs to install Global Positioning Systems and machines to accept credit cards when it raised fares in 2004. Cabs must have the equipment as of their first regular inspection after Oct. 1.

Drivers have to pay fees averaging 5% of each credit card transaction.

A spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg declined to comment.

A two-day strike this month caused delays but not major headaches for most cab riders.

Although this was posted on the 19th, I was watching Eyewitness earlier and it seems some cabbies are scheduled to go into talks about another strike at 1AM this morning. Wonder if this will really happen. Lot's of cabbies will still drive though, even if the strike happens.

who cares, the only time you really need a taxi is for the airport or late night. They're only hurting themselves.

Pretty interesting op-ed piece about the reasons for the strike. I agree with the cab drivers now...

Not all cab drivers will strike and those who work are going to clean up big time.

i like how the taxi driver is also an expert on new technologies. If that's the case, why the hell is he driving a cab?

I simply can't agree with the taxi drivers. Any increase in costs will eventually be pushed onto the consumers by the constant pressure that is soon to be exerted on the TLC to raise the rates. The cab drivers will only bear the burden of this cost for a short period.
