Downtown as Never Seen Before

This is not a drawing, nor is it from Google Maps. This is by Microsoft.
Now this is not your ordinary picture of downtown, as you can notice the buildings actually look like the real ones, with the proper shapes, colours, textures...etc. This goes one step beyond what google maps did, because Virtual Earth actually puts the shape AND texture on the building so you can navigate through the city.
They have pretty much all buildings in TO over a few stories tall, with their proper shapes and sizes. I was even able to find my low rise (3 floor) building!
If I had to guess, Microsoft is using its new acquisition Photosynth to put together models of the buildings from existing documentation (photos, satellite shots). It would be just too much work to try and gather new data on all those buildings for most major cities. Photosynth basically takes existing 2D pictures and builds a 3D model out of them, incredible stuff. For more info, please watch the video by following the previous link.
They do not have much data outside major cities, but for now its amazing just to go and fly around New York, Toronto, Miami... |

I'm not joking.
You can get detailed and accurate maps of military installations off of Google earth. (looking up Area 51 was fun)
Although I did have fun trying to figure out where Kim Jong Il's palace was in Pyong Yang |
