Wow, those were the days, huh? I wasn't really aware of that. I didn't get into the modern day EDM scene till around 2003. How times have changed. Now about anyone can get a digital release. I picked a bad time to start up with this I guess, with the market so flooded, it's hard to stand out. |
Its all about perspectives really. I ordered the trance and progressive for a local record shop in 99-2000 and I remember seeing the list of trance coming from the distributors every week and thinking the market was saturated back then! Now 7 years later, the market just has even more music.
I started in this stuff around 1993, and even though there were a lot of tracks I still love to this day back then, things have progressed alot production-wise since then. Thats a good thing I think, because that means things haven't really stagnated, its just this music has finally grown out of its infancy. Still, sometimes I miss the simplicity of some of my favorite "classic" tracks. |

The Genre certainly hasn't stagnated, I listen to stuff from 2003 and I realise how much the genre has changed just in that time, the stuff we call trance now wouldn't have passed in those days! Today's trance has trackcounts up to 50, not like the old days where you were pushing 10! That's got to add complexity to the production I think, but the good thing is that those track counts are available to more people these days, so there's much more variety.
Of course the market being so crowded does make it hard to become a superstar producer like Paul Van Dyk or Sven Vath or something. For me trance has always been about the music anyway, not like rock where its all about the rockstars, that's what I like about it.
On topic: I've always produced completely alone except for manuals tutorials and this forum. I prefer to do things myself, which is why you would rarely find me replying to threads about EQ, I never needed to "learn" how to EQ, I just sort of played until I understood a what did what, so I can't understand why other's often have trouble. A few of my friends are interested in production, but most of them are only planning to start producing, they haven't really started. So of course when they come to me for advice, its really the blind leading the blind:crazy: |

Yeah i guess im like the majority of you. I only get help from the site, but its great help at that . I seriously have learned so much in the last few months. I did have a msn buddy that I meet in the promotion forum. It was trippy cuz after we got to talking i found out that he actually lived right down the street from where i used to live in Vancouver. Small world huh?. We used to send each other songs to get each others opinions, but he had only been producing about a year like me so..... But he was actually pretty talented for how long he had been playing. I dont know what ever happened to him him he just kinda disappered. I remember he said he was supposed to have a release on deepblue, but i havent seen anything since.
Now out of all of my friends none of them produce, let alone even listen to trance. :( . But i do have a friened over seas whos getting back into production. |

I am 20 and have no time. Too much uni. At least summer is almost here and that means 3.5 months of holidays (if I'm not working).
