A question about a death in my family

The sunday that just passed, my cousin was killed in a car accident.

the story as to what happened is as follows;
the car that she was in (wearing seatbelt, in passenger seat) was waiting at an intersection behind a Jeep at a stop sign, with two way traffic from both directions, now apparently, the Jeep went and the car she was in followed behind as well not stopping at the sign, and the car was t-boned and she died at the scene of the accident.

now my question, her boyfriend was driving, and since he failed to stop at the stop signed and which unfortunately caused her death, will he be charged with any sort of crime? i.e. involuntary manslaughter or similar.

I don't wish for this to happen to him as he now has to live with his mistake, and i believe that this is more than punishment enough I am just curious as to how the law works.

thanks for any replies.

Unfortunately yes. He faces 10-30 years.

civil suit: wrongful death.

kinda like what OJ got from the Goldman family.

Depending on the emotional impact, he might be acquitted because losing a loved one is painful enough.

I know this exists in Brazil, and I remember the story of an actress who accidentally ran over her child's head (the kid decided to hide under the car and she had not seen him). She was devastated, and the judge understood there was no reason to put her in jail.

According to my little solicitor friend, he'll be charged with something along the lines of 'dangerous driving causing death' or a similar offence depending on where you are in the world.
From there they'll factor in speeding, DUI, prior offences and so on, most courts here are fairly reluctant to imprison if they can help it but there will be some loss of licence and fines at the very least, possibly a civil suit if anyone else was hurt, property broken.

from what i know about him, they had only been dating 3 months, he's 20 she was 18.(which is irrelevant) so i mean, losing a loved one..not so much, but who knows.

edit:
I'm in canada.

it will come down to the judge and prosecution as to what penalty is deemed fit. not giving way is different from wreckless speeding or DUI so i would think leniency is to be expected.
