So, it finally came out today. The album which has been talked about for ages, not solely because its a new Radiohead album, but because Radiohead let us set the price.
Basically, you go to the site (www.inrainbows.com) and enter in how much you want to pay for it (including 0). In return you get the full album at 160 kbps mp3. Now, I don't go normally go for anything under APX/V0 (VBR), but on the oink forums, everyone says its encoded well, so no problems there.
For around $80 (I think) you can order the disc box set, which includes a bonus disc (i think bonus tracks as well on album) and all the trappings of a traditional CD.
Radiohead are doing this because they are free of any record contracts now from what I understand. In terms of thier music, I really liked the last album, and will download this one for a listen now.
Anyway, is this a step in the right direction? Personally, I would never, ever buy an mp3 (even if I was a DJ). It just doesn't seem right, and you miss out on the artwork etc. But $80 to have a physical (albeit pimped up) cd?
Good idea, or load of pretentious wank? |

160kb/s is a little low, be nice if it was 192+
It'll be good to see more artists making use of digital sales and at least you know the money is going to them instead of the record companies. Which I was mostly ambivalent about up until recently they began to show how low as you can go and setting new standards of scum legal activity. |

Don't know if it's a good idea, and how profitable it will be for them, only time will tell. I think it's definitely a step in the right direction though. Instead of fighting the internet/market, work out how to use it to your advantage. I think they're doing that.
$80 for the cd seems a bit much but I guess diehard fans will go for it.

its a good 160 kbps tho. its not like 160 kbps ripped by someone popping a cd in and through itunes/wmp.
good album thus far. |

i like the fact that the artists are respecting the fact that anyone with broadband and half a brain can work out how to get their cds for free so they're giving us the convenience of giving it to us but saying "hey it'd be nice if you paid"
good idea imo |

Pity they go lost up their arseholes after "the bends', those three albums including pablo and ok computer are and will always be amazing.
I will download it, print out the code on some a3, wipe my arse on it and mail it stright back to Radiohead HQ. They can put it on the wall with the photo of grandma.:o |

The Bends was before OK Computer.
I completely agree with you thought, the first three albums were so amazing and the rest have been ing awful. |

I'd give this one a listen before passing judgement, I reckon its allright. I'm not an overly obsessed Radiohead fan, I mean I love some tracks off all the albums (they all have at least a few good tracks), but I rarely sit down and listen to an entire album. I've listened through this one a few times though. |

| Would it not have been better to offer it at a lower bitrate, thus encouraging those who like it to then buy the CD? |
