So I downloaded Doom with uTorrent (bad movie, I know), watched it, burned it on a CD and now I can't delete it.
You know that irritating message "Cannot delete xyz: It is being used by another person or program."
Thing is, since then I have restarted my computer at least 5-6 times and the same problem still occurs.

Solutions?

try deleting it in safe mode, then running anti-malware scanner.

My friend swears he gets bad stuff in his torrents every single time he downloads a torrent. Never had a bad experience myself, but try the above. :)

hah
yeah...you're probably seeding it in utorrent, meaning utorrent is constantly reading from it

close utorrent, then delete it :)

That can't be it because I downloaded it to desktop, stopped seeding it, closed uTorrent and then moved the file to E:\.

Software like what? Ad-Aware, Spybot and such?

Try closing any media player programs and anything that might be associated with the type of video file that it is.

prejudging by your circumstances, i agree with suspicion, and say that some app is locking up your file, and you can't delete it. It could be any app that you're running that starts at Startup or as a service, such as a Torrent app, virus detector, explorer.exe, svchost.exe, etc ..... delete in safe mode.

another thing you could test out is make a copy of the movie on your desktop, then get some bit editor online, and attempt to edit the contents in the "locked" file. if you don't have permissions to do that, then yup it's locked. i would do that just for the kicks of it. editing binary files. :wtf:

So... How do I start up in safe mode?

First is first.
I've never used any commercial anti-malware software, so free (in my opinion) is sufficient.
Download http://www.safer-networking.org/ (Spybot, anti-spyware+some more)
get all the updates. (I have no idea what TeaTimer does, but anytime I have ever enabled it during an install, it annoys me. I suggest unchecking it, unless someone else can recommend it as being neccessary)

Download http://free.grisoft.com/ (AVG, anti-virus)
likewise, download all the updates.

Now you have anti-spyware + anti-virus installed.

Restart the computer, and as it is loading up, just jam on the F8 button. A screen will pop up asking what mode you would like Windows to start up in. Choose Safe Mode Without Networking.

Now you are in safe mode. Go ahead and run the above software. It will take 10-30 minutes average each, depending on # of total files on hard drive, etc.
SpyBot is generally great at recommending scanned files for deletion, but overview the "bad" files just to make sure you aren't deleting something that may have triggered a false-positive. After Spybot completes, select Immunize!. This will safegaurd you from certain malware for the future.
I've never gotten anything from AVG (:pops collar:), so overview that.

Then go ahead and try and delete your file.

If you want, you can see if the file deletes before doing any scanning, but I'd rather just have you scan regardless since it seems you've never done it.

cheers

Okay, I tryed starting uTorrent again and completely removing Doom from download list (although it simply said it's finished).
Afterwards I shut uTorrent down and managed to successfully delete Doom from E:\.
I guess that was the problem after all.

Already have Spybot - Search & Destroy and TeaTimer annoyed me as well so I also turned it off. :D

I used AVG before and didn't really like it... Now I'm using NOD32 and I'm satisfied. :)

Thanks for the info, now I'll now if any similar problems occur in future. :)
