windows vista related (dwm?)

i noticed when i had the task manager open that there are processes for both "windows explorer" AND "desktop window manager".
i may be dumb (and have been before:p ) but i dont remember having a "desktop window manager" in XP... also, it takes up a LOT of system resources.
so my questions are...
do i need this process?
if not, how do i prevent it from opening at startup?
also, is there a website relevant to disabling these unnecessary processes?
thanks!

There is no such process in XP. Although, Vista is a whole new ball game when it comes to backround processes and garbage. If it's anything like XP, you should be able to kill the process. If the OS goes berserk, than open the task manager again, and go to File > New Task (Run) > type 'Desktopwindowmanager.exe' or whatever the full name of the process is, and it should start back up.
As for killing the process indefinately, I'm just not sure as I don't have/use vista. Sorry I can't be more help. |

It is part of the aero process. The things that make vista look fancy, ie the transparencies, the moving icons, animated folders and such.
It is one of the hogs of resources (especially when dual 22" widescreen monitors are used as a large desktop).
I do not know what would happen if you kill it, but it is tied into the OS |
