Commercialism --> Lack of Respect
View this Thread in Original format

It happens all the time. There is a track that sounds good, so good that even people that dont like trance/techno start liking it too. The song, and the artist start loosing respect from the underground following that the song was likely originally produced for. Some examples could be:

Darude - Sandstorm
Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun
Iio - Rapture

A lot of people are now flaming these songs, and the artists because the song hit it big outside of trance circle. Just wanted your opinion on why? Do you feel that these songs and artists deserve even more respect because they were able to acheive a mass appeal?

i had respect for all those tunes i still haev respect for Southern Sun now but i kno at the end of summer ill hate....theyget over played that the problem and i hate tunes i hear over and over again like sandstorm
plastikE
I dont think they're under-rated at all....I think that those songs have certain elements to them that appeal to people who normally wouldn't like trance/techno...(but that doesnt meant that these songs are great....ugg)...

ok if I didnt make any sense its because im tired as ... so sorry :toothless

Hearing Sandstorm once is like hearing it ten times cause of that damn annoying synthline drills itself into your head.

Still have yet to hear southern sun.. Iio - Rapture is nice. Who's the vocalist, she's a very good singer?
Damo
there's a distinct musical difference between southern sun and sandstorm tho. you cannot class them together, Southern sun is no where near as popular as Sandstorm was. if they both came out at the same time and no one knew about them i'd like southern sun way more than i ever liked sandstorm. sandstorms just this annoying repititious synth with a few decent build ups, southern sun is just a beautiful song

I dont mean to narrow it down to those songs only, but any trance or techno song that made it to 'Pop' status. I guess you could also include Voodoo and Serrano - Blood is Pumping, the Prodigy - Fat of the Land album, anything that went really big.

One of the things I love about Trance and Techno is that it isnt popular. When songs go commercial, I admit that I dont like them as much, but It could be because I end up hearing them too much.

exactly. I liked PPK's ressurrection cause I at least think the melody is beautiful and it has some nice atmospheric swoosh sounds, but Darude's Sandstorm is just plain ugly. Ugly synthwork.

I live in the US, & dont listen to the radio. Internet kills the video & radio star.

Although I did hear Iio - Rapture once in a store, and I thought. "cool"

Lack of respect? Im pretty sure radio stations need the permission of the artists before they play stuff on the radio.

I don't flame the songs, I just got annoyed at radio people for ruining a song by playing it 10 times a day! People get sick of any song after it's been in heavy rotation for awhile. Every hit is milked for all it's worth, then discarded.

And that's why I hate pop music, and I shudder when good trance songs get sucked in.

i used to not like rapture, but then i liekd it, now its annoying. Southern sun never got me though, i dislike it very much.

its the people that dont like trance! they are the people who like these "commercial" songs, basically because its the only tracks they know. they heard them on the radio or in the club a couple of times because you have to hear 'em just about everywhere you go. the only reason we're (as Tranceaddicts) tired of them is because all we listen to is trance, techno, hardhouse, progressive, goa, whatever... and when we hear one of these songs, to us its sort of like listening to an overplayed Linkin Park, or Staind song that you hear on the radio like 5 times a day. so we label these songs cheese. its not because they're sucky songs, its just that most TAs are tired of listening to them, theyre old and tacky now. but its still a good way to turn a newbie onto to electronica. and when a newbie is at a club and he hears the Dj spin Iio-Rapture, he thinks its the . so thats what the dj plays this crap for. i dont have an opinion on wether or not this is a good or bad thing for the future of techno, but i can say for sure that im tired of this topic.
