Sorry but thats garbage. When people fight fires they already take into account most of the relevant practical variables like wind direction, how far away embers may land and the dryness of the ground. What do you hope to achieve by having every little detail of the situation modelled? At best it will result in a marginal improvement to the manner in which we fight fires.
You seem to think that if we can accurately model the workings of fires the problem will be solved or that at the least we will experience large gains in fighting them. Not true. The problems are well known and dont have easy solutions.
The problem - you have dry ground, a lot of very combustible material, high wind, a big fire and limited resources with which to put it out. Oh Wait! Now that we have this thing accurately modelled its easy, problem solved. |

Optimal Forest Fire Control: an Extension of Parks' Model
In this paper we re-examine the problem of optimal forest fire suppression which was previously studied by Parks. The growth of the fire is modeled by a deterministic differential equation in which the level of the suppression forces appears as a control variable. After defining a suitable objective functional to represent the total cost of suppression forces used and the losses resulting from fire damages, we obtain an optimal control problem where the final time is unknown. Using results from control theory we find the optimal level of suppression forces as a nonconstant function of time. |
First time, I'm looking into the technical literature actually. This sort of thing is exactly what I'm talking about. |

Wow I feel really bad for the people in California. When I first read about this only a few thousand people had to evacuate the premises, but now 1 million have now evacuated the Southern California region. According to this msn article the "shifting flames have burned across nearly 600 square miles — an area larger than New York City — killing one person, destroying more than 1,300 homes and prompting the biggest evacuation in California history, from north of Los Angeles through San Diego to the Mexican border."

How is it right now. I assume with a 4 hr diff night fall is upon you guys. Sucks. If I had to evacuate I would get my
1.sports cards(good ones),
2.MP3 & DIVX collection(2 or 3 binders of cd's),
3. photo binder and some
4.clothing(jacket),
5.flashlight,
6.wallet,
7.cell.
no particular order above.
This could be a good thread: In an evac what would you get out of your house. |
