I really don’t see how (or why) a dicussion's medium should have an impact on how "serious" it is. I learn far more from people ive never met in the PDD than I do from most people I talk to in real life. Why is it less serious because it’s a different form of communication?
I think most people that post an "internet - serious business" picture are more likely to be those that struggle to express themselves adequately in the written form. imo a discussion online is just as "serious" as any other discussion you might be having with someone, I'd like to hear arguments to the contrary. |

It has the potential to be just as serious, but anonymity gives people something to hide behind when they make an ass of themselves, which some people do quite often, just because their life outside of the internet is one devoid of personal expression. Without the fear of immediate social repercussions which could have extended consequences upon their way of life, people are not afraid to say things they would not normally say.
For example, if you stand outside of your home with a sign that says "GOD HATES FAGS", you might just irritate some of your friends and neighbours, get thrown at you, etc. Or maybe you'll get business cards and personal contacts, depending on whether or not you live in the midwestern United States/Texas. However, if you post a banner that says "GOD HATES FAGS" on the internet, chances are pretty decent that nobody will be able to take action to exact social consequences on you, save for those that can be exacted within an inernet-specific community, which is one most easily turned off. |

i wanted to hear an argument as to why discussion conducted via the medium of internet is automatically classified as "less serious" than a discussion conducted by other means.
that isn't an argument. |
