New Rochelle?

I am considering moving to New Rochelle downtown, but heard that some areas of New Rochelle are not safe. I heard that there is gang violence and much crime around downtown, esp. near New Roc City and Main Street.

I am looking at an apartment on Huguenot Street by the train station - How safe is the area around huguenot street by the train station?

Thank You everyone!

I know people who live around there. Not the BEST area, but it's not the worst either. Where are you from?

For $1400-1500/month, do you think you can get a nice, clean studio in Manhattan in a safe section of town like the Village?

You'd be better off looking at Jersey City in my opinion. You can spend $700/month on a nice studio and commute into midtown or downtown in less than 25 min.

How is the Huguenot Street area by the train station? There is an Avalon apartment by there...Like is that a safe area?

It is weird because people say that the area around Avalon is not bad, but then people say that the area around New Roc City, which is 2 blocks away, is rowdy and unsafe at night

that area is not bad, the avalon apartments are brand new... alot of college students live there, the apartments r really nice... new roc city recently has been bad, n by bad its just been 1 or two instances that have been in the news, mostly involving gangs n dumb stuff but no one really hangs out there anyways or goes there b/c there are so many other places to go... no one bothers wit new roc its a waste nowadays

I see - Thanks for the info Mike, I appreciate it :)

But what I don't understand is how can the Avalon area be nice, but then 2-3 blocks away have an area that is not so nice (even though there have only been a few incidents) - Like my friends tell me that there are lot of sketchy ppl standing and hanging around there at night
Mike C
the avalon area is enclosed and is separate from new roc, the ppl at new roc dont go into the avalon area, the new roc area is like the where the sketchy ppl hang out but at the same time no one is really walking around there other than those ppl, most ppl dont bother with new roc anymore, it hard to understand cuz its hard to explain lol

no way. not in the village. I am paying that much + and I live in harlem. lol

new roc is not the best area just because there are a LOT of hood teens that go there to hang out (the arcades, movies, etc) I know the teens I work with go there a lot and lets just say they are not the best kids in the world. a lot of gangs and violence and . but New Rochelle has a lot of new condos going up for wayy cheaper than manhattan, so that means a good deal in real estate. I would do it. Just mind your bizniz around the kids and they will leave you alone.

For 1400 you can get a nice studio in hoboken nj, definitely one of the nicer areas in the tri state. Plus you're a 15 minute PATH train ride from both midtown and downtown, and only a ten minute train ride from the village. And, the path is only $1.20 each way if you buy 20 rides.

Hoboken is the closest you'll get to anything like the city, without actually being in the city.
