I didnt mean it should be entirely dead, but you need bass traps and deadening to reduce standing waves, I just meant that simply putting carpet on the walls wont be good enough for the monitoring room, whereas it can be acceptable in a recording room...

Well, I don't have any carpet on my wall but I do think those things can make a difference in certain cases. It is a very budget friendly solution but that doesn't make it wrong. :)
I have some foam on the walls here and there, might as well just have been a carpet of some time, I think the overal result would have been pretty similar... It's really all about yourself in the end. I wouldn't mind putting a carpet up on the wall if it helps :).

As for the 'intelligent' things you listed, yes, paying attention to headroom is a good idea, but all the actual advice he gives about headroom is complete nonsence:
"If you start pushing a little bit too hard, it starts squawking like a chicken, if you go too low it starts squawking, you have to work within a certain realm, otherwise you get zapped either way, so you psychologically start bringing your headroom down lower and you do not realize it but after about 3-4 months, you got it in this place for you in the small certain limited band, you don't have this big sound, you don't have this sound, you can't get the big sound. I try to get a boom out of the bass drum, in one of my albums, my CD, boom, I try to get that big boom, I could not get a big boom, I paid bucks, and could not get the boom"
What the is all that supposed to mean? |
I actually agree with the italic part for one. Productions produced too load will sound squashed and flat. Sometimes I find my tracks to be too low in volume, I patch that up a little.
They guy in general is really hard to follow, and I think most comments are biased as hell. On the other hand he is very obvious about what he likes and does not like. He is a lousy talker that's for sure :)
What I'm trying to say is... Just try and obtain the valuable information from it and have a laugh about the rest :). |

His music is actually not that bad imo. Funny cover though! :D |
I love how the "hit" from this CD is a track called "I want a Walmart girl".
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA |

| What makes me truly sad is that I can't add 'I Want A Walmart Girl' to my myspace page. |

DAMN!!! You can barely hear the vocals, and the bass was EQ-ed by a trained monkey and just plain drowned-out. The second sample I clicked on got even worse -- the whole mix sat under a pillow!! |

Not to mention that almost all of his 'top friends' seem to be young teenage girls :haha: |

is that dude drunk or what? he stops in the middle of a sentience more than one time |
That makes the whole thing even funnier.. He's not likely drunk, as he's a good Christian. But he has a real problem articulating himself, and choosing the proper words.
The real comedy for me, is how he states things like "Genelecs are the best, mackies second", period. And that the Behringer mixer has no colouration of the sound - and not least how Pro Tools seem to be unable to give you the "BOOM" and warmth, while Nuendo cleans up his tracks by some magic.
When he wants to help us choose a mics, he states that there's no need for any other mic than the one he's using -the 3000$ newman u87- no matter what, and every other mic will add colour and basically f**k up your tracks.
And not least how some damn carpet on your walls will do the same job as proper bass traps. I'd frankly laugh if I'd come into some guy's studio, seeing all of his walls covered by wall-to-wall carpet. I'm not gonna dismiss that it could be somehow useful - but it's no easy fix for your lower band issues, and arguably the most important area imo. |

| I think this was already posted, but still amazing... The fact that he paid bucks and still could not get a boom makes me sad:( |

| I forgot how funny this sh*t was! I wonder if he's still trying to get a big BOOM! I fall out of my chair laughing everytime he talks about getting a big BOOM!! |
