And a new motherboard most likely....:(
Just got a new PC back around labor day and it has a GeForce 8800 Ultra and a IKW PSU. Opted for that cause I didn't think they would release something new so soon (the Ultra edition just came out in May). Probably won't upgrade to something like this for another year or so...put this GPU on the computer downstairs (which is old and only runs AGP, will need another new motherboard...or just switch this one out). |

Yeah well I'm not planning on doing SLI (it doesn't really work with Vista anyways) so I figured one Ultra is better than one GTX (but I know two GTX is better than one Ultra). I didn't want to regret it later on and my parents budget was just enough. I had a choice basically...GTX and Quad Core QX6800 or an Ultra and QX6700...and you can OC it to match the default speed of a QX6800 (or bump it to 3.2 if you get liquid cooling), so I figured it was worth it in the long run. I really wanted an OCed GTX, but that wasn't offered. And the core clock speed would have been only 75mhz faster than the graphics card I have in an old Alienware computer.
I think if I would have waited I could have gotten a QX6850 with a GTX and would have been happy (and it would have been around the same price as what I paid)..but oh well...I don't really do too much CPU intensive tasks right now. I probably could have settled on a Q6600 and saved a ton, but like I had with the GTX vs. Ultra debate...I would have regretted it later on. Don't really want to keep upgrading every 6 months to a year. I think if you don't plan on adding a second card, the Ultra is your best bet if you really want the best graphics card. Besides, the GTX is a year old (but so it he proc I got, but like I said, you can OC it and it's basically the same as the QX6800 in every aspect just a little slower). |

oh, you got a great card for sure! just that you paid an extra 30% for a card that gives you less than 10% performance increase. probably even less if you OC'd the GTX. but hey, its your (or even better, your parent's money!!) so i hope you enjoy your gaming system from hell! you've certainly got a lil ninja. |

Whatever, I made my decision. 10% yeah I know not a lot, but like I said...I didn't want to upgrade soon nor do SLI so I figured it would last me a while and if I did do SLI..it would be very good. Don't guilt trip me about it. And I did pay like half of the computer.
The Ultra also has better cooling than the GTX, and like I said, it's the best and fastest GPU Nvidia has right now...shouldn't need to upgrade in two years or so. And even in two years..it will still play most of the games and 612mhz core clock and beyond will be the standard soon...you may see 1ghz in two years or so. The GTX is great, but it's essentially been replaced now by OCed GTXs with better cooling and the Ultra. I could have OCed a GTX manually but who knows if it would be stable near Ultra levels.
Like I said, I wanted an OCed GTX but Dell (where I bought it from) wasn't offereing that..so I opted for the Ultra instead so I wouldn't need an upgrade. I would have gone with ABS or Alienware, but I would have had to wait a few more months for them to come down in price and at the time..I got $500 off with a student discount and a 12% off promo with a 3 year warranty.
According to benchmarks and some things i've read on hardware/gaming sites, the Ultra is pretty close to two GTXs in SLI, and obivously faster than one GTX. Two Ultras are even faster than two GTXs..so I have that option right now if the Ultras come down in price and it looks like they have (around $650 now). |

Well not really. The Geforce 9's will be out soon. I'm not saying you made a bad buy and , your system is great but you won't need to wait 2 years for those sorts of speeds. More like 6 months, if that.
The G9s are meant to be coming out in January. |

Yeah I know but the GeForce 8 series should be able to play most games for the next two years. You shouldn't need to upgrade everytime a new card comes out. The GeForce 5950 Ultra has lasted 4 years and just now it will no longer play games like Bioshock, Crysis, UT3 etc. And from what i've read, the new G9 series is only being offered for mid-range or entry-level this month (when they come out), the high end ones won't be out till sometime next year...probably in the spring. The GTX is about a year old now, the Ultra has only been out since May, so to me...it's a more recent card so not as much of a need to upgrde right away.
I mean in someways...I think it probably would have been better getting a GTX and then eventually getting another one and put it in SLI and saved the $300 on an even faster processor..but it's too late now. Like I said, I don't do that much CPU intensive tasks (like video or audio editing),so I could have been fine with even a Q6600 and saved another $500 but I opted for the QX6700 (if I went Alienware, I would have gotten the standard, non OCed Q6700 anyways). This system should be fine for the next few years. I can always put the older parts on the four year old system I have downstairs (which my dad uses). |

As the chart on the Nvidia website shows, there is a big difference. Most benchmarks have the Ultra somewhere in between a single GTX and dual GTXs in SLI. It all depends, mostly at the high resolutions will you see the biggest difference...like at 1920 x 1200 and above. The GT though, that was just released this week...that should be pretty close to a GTX, but still not quite an Ultra.
Like pkcRAISTLAIN said, there is about a 10% difference between the Ultra and the GTX, so probably like at least a 30% difference between an Ultra and a GTS (and that is a GTS with 640 mb of memory, probably almost 50% with the 320mb version).
The GT has only 512 mb of memory, but the clock speed is 600mhz, which is a wee bit more than the GTX. The GTX has more memory though, which usually means you can jack up the AA and anti-aliasing and all that good stuff without your FPS lagging. The Ultra just does this a wee bit better than the GTX, due to an even better clock speed, memory speed and cooling system (they've improved the fan a little). If your not hardcore and need all the setting maxed out and at very high resolutions and want to play the latest games, your best bet is the GT. |
