Every day after school... 4 hours a day... help with rebuilding until all the damage is repaired. Of course, if that were me as a kid, they wouldn't have to punish me... just turn me over to my folks... the beatin' that would ensue would be far worse than any punishment John Q. State could dish out!

Yeah, but with parents nowadays all he'll get is a timeout and no dessert for a week.

what kind of world do we live in when a kid can't play with matches any more?

yeah, fine, someone's gotta punish the little . i agree with the community service type suggestion.
SuspicionVandit
he seems cute. No punishment for him.
Maybe the parent deserve something though. Slam their head into the hood of their car with a barrel in their jaw asking "where was your son on x/x/x"?

Either the boy is old enough to be held accountable for his actions OR his parents/guardians should be held accountable for his actions.

IMO, so many of the parents in the us suck. Most of them don't teach their children manners or the difference between right and wrong, they don't instill morals or values, they don't feed their children healthy meals, they don't encourage their children to exercise and stay fit, they expect the teachers to educate them, they expect game stations and televisions to entertain them....

If you prosecuted the parents with the hopes of setting an example, would other parents become better parents? Prolly not. So, I guess they should do nothing.

You first.

I don't think the child should be punished any more than he already has been. The parents *should* enact some sort of punishment to make the kid fully aware of how one action set off a chain of events he did not intend, but jail time? Legal action? No way. Completely unnecessary. First off, I am sure the kid certainly did not intend for it to get so out of hand. That is not excuse enough all on its own, of course, as ignorance often leads to inadvertence, but I think the guilt of knowing one's actions have lead to the destruction of homes and families, despite the intentions, is punishment enough for any person, as far as the social aspect is concerned.

Not everything bad that happens has someone to blame. No good could come out of punishing a child by way of example. Community service may very well be in order, but that should be up to the parents, not the people who would so readily have their vengeance.

I don't think anyone should have any sort of sympathy for the little ****** whatsoever. We're talking lives here. People lost their family members because some dumb-ass felt like playing with matches.

He was a stupid kid who was having some fun. Having the deaths of howevermanypeople on your conscious is already a hefty penalty. I'd say that and a load of community service is good.

The parents should be punished for child neglect.

In reality state shouldn't get involved. This is America people! In about a week all the families affected by this will sue the out of those parents/the kid/pets/etc.
