I've seen some people around asking for cue files. What is the utility of a cue file and what software do i use to open them. I usually open them with notepad but i don't think it is supposed to be opened with notepad..

'some people' :) yes... :D
Actually, I still have another question about this, already asked in another thread, maybe it wasn't the good place...

Anyone knows of a program that separates the mp3 file itself without de/reencoding, using the cuesheet?

You should get the program calles CD-WinR (check Kazaa or Download.com) Put the mp3 together with the cue-file (make sure they both labeled exact the same way) in that program and you have a CD with track selection (no pauses ofcourse).

I haven't found such software. I tried download.com and google.com. But then again, I don't want to burn it as AudioCD, since I have an MP3 Discman... I just want them as individual mp3 tracks...

RenderedDream: anyways, why to edit the cue file? :conf: :)

Here's a selection about the CUE file...
Borrowed from the Djmixes2k site :)

" The mysterious cue file..

A cue file is basically a .txt file that enable some burning progs to "cut" continuous large mixes into audio tracks. The mix still play continuously but you can have direct access to the different tracks if you wish. Of course it is not necessary to use a cue sheet but without it you'll have one large continues track only. CdrWin, FireBurner and the latest NERO understand cue sheets nicely. If you want to burn your mix using the cue just open CdrWin, Record Disk, Load CueSheet, browse to your .cue file and burn. That's it! Make sure the .mp3 file and the cue are in the same dir! For mixes longer than 80mins, you need to cut the mix to 80 or 74mins if you wish to burn the mixes as audio and you need to edit the cue file. To cut the mp3 file you can use mp3DirectCut (http://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/) or your favorite sound editor. To edit your cue, open it in NotePad and delete all tracks that passed your cut mix playing time.(74 or 80mins..) A new Winamp plugin also enables you to play the set/cue as a continues file with direct access to the different tracks. Get it here http://www.guerillasoft.com/mp3cue/index.html
Also if you want to create your own Cue sheet you can use NotePad or if you feel really lazy you can use CDRCue Cuesheet Editor located here http://www.dcsoft.com/prod03.htm
"

Hope this helps.
