Named, the defector who misled US over Iraq

The Iraqi defector whose fabricated account of Baghdad's biological weapons programme was crucial to the US case for war will be identified today on American TV as an accused thief and failed chemical engineering student.

Known as Curveball by Western intelligence agencies, the man is named for the first time on CBS's 60 Minutes show as Rafid Ahmed Alwan.

After escaping Iraq and reaching Germany in 1999, he claimed to be an engineer who had run a biological weapon plant for Saddam.

But according to the programme, he earned low marks in chemical engineering at university and was accused of theft at an Iraqi TV station where he worked.

Alwan, who is understood to be living in Germany under an assumed name, was briefly employed at the biological weapon site, allowing him to embellish his story.

The revelations come as a new book on the case shows how MI6 warned the CIA in April 2002 that Curveball had probably been fabricating his accounts - five months before the same claims appeared in Tony Blair's "dodgy dossier".

The book also shows that it was a British intelligence analyst who exposed Curveball's lies by using satellite imagery to show that he could not have watched bio-war trucks leaving a facility because a high wall was in the way.

Sigh ... I read this article in the Russian media few days ago. Very sad - its a pathetic way for organized, advanced, resourceful intelligence organizations of USA to pit its our faults and mistakes on some odd Iraqis ... a great way to try to get out of this craphole and pretend like its not their fault and that they're not responsible. Surely this will work well for any Bush lover - just find an excuse and blame someone else.

While in the reality its THEIR OWN FAULT, the fault of USA's intelligence and government agencies. They should've known better, its their job and from their long experience they know how to deal in situations like this (and they didnt do that) ... Its pathetic how they try to downplay their own failures on some odd Iraqi guy (whom they failed to do proper homework on - just like in workforce its employer's responsibility), once again blaming Iraq, Iraqi people for their own mistakes. Yes, its all Iraqi fault, they did it all to themselves, eh?

We actually do a lot more pre-emptive strikes based off of faulty info than one would imagine.

What do you expect, the CIA is a secretive branch of liars, spies, and murderers, and that's all they know. When you use these sorts of people to gather and analyze information, of course it becomes distorted and often entangled in illusions and fabrications.

Oh silly you. Considering this piece of lied to get us into the war that you neocons always wanted, one would think he'd be more aligned with someone such as yourself, Q.

I don't know if he really had personal motivations to get us into war. It sounds more like he was just a nutjob that happened to be playing the tune they wanted to hear.

he should go on Oprah and just ball his eyes out apologizing to Bill Clinton.

Hmmm it was an intentional error. The intel was presented in a way to suit a political aim.

Why for example has Blair never blamed the UK intelligence agencies (of Bush in the US)?

Perhaps because if he (they) did they would be outted as having asked for the intel to be manipulated?

Two very big and (I would still say) very capable intelligence communities duped by one man a singe dodgy source..... They knew fine that there was no WMDs.

non sense, americans had their eye on Iraq from 1991 onward as a way to dominate middle east, control oil and make Israel a superpower with sanctions that were not justified and random bombing sessions .They were gonna make up any excuse but grew very arrogant following their balkan adventures so never really bothered with the details and certainly never dreamed that their army would not do the job that is given. Anyway how can you make up nuclear threat from a country with no airfore, no navy that was patrolled by foreign planes?
