Gunman Succumbs After Killing Eight People At Finnish School
Wednesday November 7, 2007

He went on a rampage in a school, taking eight victims. And now a ninth can be added to the list - a gunman who shot up a high school in Finland has died in hospital. The shocking crime took place Wednesday, when a suspect, believed to be 18 years old, entered the building in Tuusula, Finland, about 50 kilometres north of Helsinki.

It appears the killer came in with a plan and posted it on YouTube. A brief video entitled "The Jokela High School Massacre" was discovered online. It contained a picture of the school and several images of a young man holding a handgun. Rock music blares on the track and at one point, text scrolls on screen calling for a "revolution against the system." The profile identified an 18-year-old from Finland as the author. Even though the video was taken down after the tragedy, it has since resurfaced elsewhere. You can see it here. (Embedded below) - Dave

The teen was armed with a .22 calibre pistol and came in firing. By the time his carnage was finished, eight people - including five boys, two girls and the school principal - all lay dead. At least 10 others were wounded.

At first it seemed like authorities would get some answers about the motive for the terrible act. As so often happens in these cases, the gunman turned his weapon on himself. But he didn't immediately die. Cops rushed him to hospital with the other survivors and hoped they would be able to question him. But he succumbed to his wounds several hours later. His name and any known motive so far remain a mystery.

Shootings in Finland are rare and those inside the school at the time of the crime didn't take it seriously at first. Terhi Vayrynen's brother was one of those in class when the man burst in. He told her the gun toting teen came in shouting: "Revolution! Smash everything!" When no one moved, he aimed his weapon at a TV set, shot out some windows, then left without hurting anyone. But he didn't keep the peace for long.

Teacher Kim Kiuru heard the announcement from the headmaster that all students should stay put. And then the teen came his way. "I saw the gunman running with what appeared to be a small-calibre handgun in his hand through the doors toward me after which I escaped to the corridor downstairs and ran in the opposite direction," he recalls. He observed a woman's body as he ran out, unable to stop and check on whether she was alive or dead.

"Then my pupils shouted at me out of the windows to ask what they should do and I told them to jump out of the windows ... and all my pupils were saved."

The school is home to more than 400 students, aged between 12 and 18. Cops haven't said if the killer attended the campus, but confirm only that he didn't have a criminal record and that paperwork shows he belonged to a gun club and had only received the license for his weapon on October 19th.

"He was from an ordinary family," police chief Matti Tohkanen relates. But they may never know what prompted his very unordinary final act of desperation or what message he was attempting to send.
