Okay guys. I'll be the first to admit I'm a noob when it comes to composing and sequencing, but I was wondering if anyone could check out the newest song I made and tell me things they liked, things that turned them off and anywhere I can go from here.
Thanks!

Some interesting elements in here, some parts that need a lot of work.
The biggest problem is the lack of continuity.
You haven't really built ideas on top of each other and formed a continuous stream of thought - it jumps around a lot. There are too many ideas/melodies here - you could make three songs from just this one.
Production wise the samples/synths seem reasonably unique, so you've done ok in that regard, and your melodies and composition are quite unique too.
Mastering could use some work but it's not horrible for an amateur job.
Keep it up! |

Thanks for listening, and for the kind words.
To build continuity, would you suggest I cut it back to one central melody, but reincarnate it in different forms throughout the song?
A lot of my favorite producers seem to spend much more time on an idea than I do, adding more and more layers to it with every few measures, so I reckon I should begin that practice too, to beef up my composition. |

i really like the sounds here for some reason... can't identify why.
i agree that there are some continuity issues, but i don't think you need to take out material. perhaps you could try adding more to bridge and integrate the different motifs? make them interconnect - it'll probably require compromises. |

hey hey - annoying download site, but oh well. had to wait 44 secs haha, and dont play instantly..... better be worth it
like the samples u use. Interested to know what program u used - was it fruityloops?
quite like the beats, etc.... but think more of a building up track would be good, cause its a bit random at the mo - think people mentioned it earlier. if this was done on FL, I think you can tell, and id suggest moving away from this software NOW - im not getting inot the debate again, but i think FL is rubbish - and you can tell when a tunes been made on it
if you didnt use it, than ignore my words and ill shutup..
but, yeah more of a logical flow is needed me thinks - listen to some dance tunes and hear the way they build up, layer on top of layer up to crescendo, than a 'build down' normally
good luck |

Haha, yes it was Fruity Loops. I've heard a lot of complaints about the program and I believe I could do much more with a nice Reason/Cubase setup.
But at the moment I'm only 16 and with a poorly paying job, I'm not sure when I'll get my hands on enough cash for something like reason. :(
As for the structure, currently I'm working on implementing a more recurring style of songwriting so everything isn't so all over the place anymore, I'll post up a newer track once I finish one and ask you guys if I'm on the right track.
Whats so bad with fruity loops anyway? :conf:
(I'm not disagreeing, but so far it seems to work rather well.) |

the fact I knew it was fruityloops made should be evidence enough frankly. i could hear it a mile off.
Not to diss youre song by the way, its very good, just has that 'fruityloops' element that gets on my nerves. I would seriously recomend moving away from it before you get too familiar. |

Okay, thanks for the advice!
If not Fruity Loops, what is a good sequencing program you would suggest?
Price isn't really an issue, as I'm a good saver. What do you guys use and what do you think constitutes a great program?
Any suggestions would be great, thanks! |

hey mate
for me reason is pretty good, but is not as extensive as cubase. The programs I havent used are logic and pro tools admittedly - but i really like cubase at moment.
I like it because when i used fruity i would think 'I wish i could do this to that sound' and it would be such a massiv chore, where as in cubase its so simple. Its especially great for trance cause the effects r so easy to implement you literally draw lines along the sequencer. Im no big pro, but i heard the qualityt of my music go up instantly when i used reason and than up to cubase.
So ideally id day use cubase, but i hear logic for the mc is the same sort of thing. Its great cause you can do literally ANYTHING you want to the sound, and to make matters better you can still use fruityloops in it anyway, so if you like certain features of fl (which admitedly there are some) such as the slicer, and the easy way to program drums you can just use it in cubase....
really man, i been on and off making tunes for years as my tunes from FL where quite dodgy, but now enjoying it and myu first cubase tune is the best ive done (it aint great) but defo better, and now i feel i can take music more seriously. |

That totally rings true, theres lots of times in FL where I'm like...god I just want this filter to be different right here, at this BPM. Not the whole song!!!
I'll start saving up for Cubase and Reason, they sound amazing.
In the meantime, another new track, this time around I tried to keep the different melodies at a minimum and cycle through them in layers, using buildups and breakdowns. Pretty much the same samples though.
Plus, I used a faster download site :D
