Yeah man, for about a 2 year stretch I had a phobia as well and couldn't get onto a plane. I would literally walk into the plane sometimes, sit down for a sec, then walk out. It was horrible and I missed a lot of great gigs / opportunities because of it.
A friend of mine suggested Xanax as well and it worked wonders. I took half a pill a half hour before the flight, we took off, I took another half, within 20 minutes I completely fell asleep and woke up 11 hours later landing in Argentina.
I only take it now for long flights where I want to fall asleep. I'm in Australia right now, some people say Australia is a long flight from the US, I say it's just a Xanax away :)
