none of those free programs will be able to keep up with the newly developed viruses, spyware, trojans etc. |
This is the wrong way to be thinking.
Many viruses know how to subvert the popular AV programs. This is why Norton and McAffe are useless, despite the fact that they have the most comprehensive definitions available. |

AVG Free seemed to take care of the problem, but i'm running Spybot S&D as well just in case that picks up on anything else. |

Norton and McAfee are overhyped, overpriced, leech resources and don't work . Try the new breed of paid antivirus softwares. They are awesome.
Kaspersky and NOD32. :gsmile: |

I'm only using McAfee until the subscription runs out. Got it free with the laptop. It's way too invasive and a system hog. It does the job but I could be using better stuff for free so will get Avast later. Use that on the old pc and it's fine. |

Kaspersky was rated #1 as an anti virus program, I think they have a free trial, get it at www.kaspersky.com
The best way to avoid viruses/spyware in the first place is using a safe browser and knowing what sites not to go to (Pr0n!!).
I've used firefox+******** for a while and I'm confident I can go to any website on the net and not get infected (unless I download and open crap of course...)
download firefox and install https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/
Read the instructions if you have to activate javascript to get certain sites working right. |
